Cheltenham November Meeting GET TIPS

The Winter Festival

The Winter Festival at Newbury Racecourse hosts three days of racing action in late November to get you in the mood for the festive season and the upcoming Christmas national hunt meetings. Featuring hurdle and national hunt races from Class 3 to Class 1, from Grade 1 to Grade 3, Newbury's Winter Festival celebrates all aspects of the jump racing culture. Whether it is the newcomers to the track or the proven legends of the sport - the Winter Festival welcomes the finest hurdlers and steeplechasers of the season and provides a fixture for them.

Day One

Day one warms things up by presenting the rising stars of the scene, be it the equine novices or the conditional jockeys. This is the perfect day to stake out new talents for the coming seasons; and it stages seven races:

  • The European Breeders Fund Mares Only National Hunt Novices' Hurdle (Qualifier)
  • The Rooney/Hall Beginners Chase
  • The CSP Novices Handicap Hurdle
  • The CPG Novices' Chase
  • The Newbury Racecourse Handicap Chase
  • The Conditional Jockeys Handicap
  • The Newbury Open NH Flat Race

Day Two

Day two, the Gentlemen's Day, puts a pleasant spin on the much-trialled tradition of the Ladies' Day during multiple day racing festivals. While the second day of the Winter Festival does feature all the entertaining trimmings we traditionally associate with the Ladies' Day, it also offers a Best Dressed Gentleman Competition, which ensures plenty of good looking men to feast your eye on. The Gentlemen's Day features six races:

  • The Q Associates Juvenile Novices' Hurdle
  • The Sanderson Weatherall Novices' Handicap Chase
  • The Pertemps Handicap Hurdle
  • The Fuller's London Pride Novices Chase
  • The Handicap Chase (for the Jim Joel Trophy)
  • The Newbury Racecourse 'National Hunt' Maiden Hurdle

Day Three

The third and final day of the Winter Festival centres around the iconic Hennessy Gold Cup, the most anticipated fixture of the meeting. However, this infamous race is only one of seven fixtures on the Hennessy Gold Cup Day Card:

  • The Amateur Riders Handicap Chase
  • The Newbury Novices' Hurdle
  • The Novices' Handicap Chase (for the Fulke Walwyn Trophy)
  • The Long Distance Hurdle
  • The Hennessy Gold Cup
  • The Handicap Chase
  • The Intermediate Hurdle

If you need to brighten your gloomy autumn afternoons, the Winter Festival at Newbury Racecourse is the place to do it.
