As mentioned, the Doncaster Racecourse is one of the oldest courses in Britain; however, its establishment almost did not happen. There was an attempt to close Doncaster down in 1600 because of the number of questionable characters it attracted. Those efforts were futile and the corporation went ahead with the development of the racecourse.
The first important race in Doncaster history was the Doncaster Gold Cup first ran over Cantley Common in 1766. It is the oldest continuously run horse race in the world. Ten years after the Doncaster Gold Cup was first run, the course was moved to its present location and the historic St Leger Stakes were founded – another of the world’s oldest classic horse races.
In 2007, Doncaster Racecourse underwent a £34 million development to update the course and all of its facilities. It is the only course that starts and ends the flat racing season on turf, and every year it hosts the prestigious four-day Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, which is considered by many to be the sporting occasion of the Autumn season.
