Newcastle Racecourse is set in Gosforth Park, just to the north of the city that shares its name. It’s a venue for racing throughout the calendar and is well supported by the keen sports fans of the area.
Several high-quality jump races are held at the track. The Fighting Fifth Hurdle, run each November, is a recognised staging post on the road to Cheltenham for potential Champion Hurdlers.
The Eider Chase, a four-mile test in February, is often run on searching ground and is a genuine test of stamina for possible Grand National runners.
Since 2016, flat racing at Newcastle has taken place on an all-weather tapeta surface. This has allowed Newcastle races to stage regular floodlit fixtures, but the big flat race each year is still the Northumberland Plate.
Formerly known as the Pitmen’s Derby, this two-mile handicap attracts a big field and huge crowds to the track.

Newcastle races are currently being run behind closed doors because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation.
This is set to be reviewed and updated in line with government advice, with Newcastle races keen to welcome back punters as soon as it is safe to do so.
It’s still worth checking Newcastle races fixtures because the decision to allow spectators in could change. If you book tickets to a Newcastle Racecourse event that is then moved to behind closed doors, refunds will be processed through the official course website.
