This charming racecourse in the heart of the Scottish Borders near the town of Kelso is building its reputation as 'Britain's Friendliest Course', after winning the title of 'Best Small Course in Scotland and Northern England' in 2007. Surrounded by rolling hills and featuring a golf course in the centre of the track, Kelso racecourse won't remain a secret insider tip for very long.

The Kelso area has been infatuated with the sport of horse racing since the 1700s; it has however been fickle when it came to picking the location of the race course. Running most races at Caverton Edge in 1734, following a few racing seasons held at Blakelaw; it wasn't until the 12th July 1822 that the Kelso racing community made a commitment to the current racecourse at Berrymoss.
Until 1888 the dominant form of racing was the Flat races. However, when the United Border Hunt was moved to Kelso's Berrymoss track that year the transformation of the racecourse into a National Hunt-only facility was almost instant.
The tracks impressive and serious Steeple Chase fences and the uphill run-in included in its unique layout make it a favourite track for horses aiming for the National Hunt Festival at Aintree.
Bad News: The closest train station is Berwick-Upon-Tweed, 22 miles from the racecourse, and there is no connecting bus.
The course is about one mile north of Kelso, on the B6461 Ednam Road. You can reach Kelso via the A698, A68 and A7 from Edinburgh and the A699 from the West.

Tweedie Restaurant: Located upstairs in the Tweedie Stand this dining venue has great views across the track. It also offers all-inclusive packages from £75 per person.
