History Of Brighton Racecourse

The first racing facilities at Brighton were located in an area called White Hawk Down, later to be known as Race Hill, a venture which was sponsored by Brighton's wealthy and aristocratic community members. Race Hill hosted its first two day event in 1783 and gained enough renown and popularity to attract Royal spectators in its second year of running. By 1788 Race Hill was home to a four day race meeting and a grandstand with the capacity to seat 24 guests.

Brighton Racecourse moved to its current location in 1822 and underwent a series of changes, including serving as an ammunition and food store during World War I; racing was also suspended during World War II. However, since the grand opening of the present grandstand in 1965, racing has been as regular as clockwork at the historic Brighton Racecourse.

Brighton Racecourse has also played host to two world records; Blink Gelding breaking the record over ¾ mile in 1929, and more recently Chase The Door's record breaking 1990 performance of 1:30.9 over a mile.
