As hunting was a favourite past-time of the Somerset region, it comes as no surprise that the Wincanton area is credited with hosting the first ever National Hunt Steeple Chase even in the United Kingdom in the 19th century. At Hatherleigh Farm near Wincanton the National Hunt committee conducted a series of steeple chases between the 1860s and 1913.
Racing was suspended first during World War I and again during World War II. However, in between in 1925, Wincanton Racecourse was moved to its current site at Kingwell Farm, although the inaugural race did not take place until 1927.
Since 1966 Wincanton Racecourse has been run by the Racecourse Holdings Trust, which has continuously worked to improve the quality of the premises, while upholding the standards of National Hunt racing worthy to its area of origin.
