The Nottingham area always had a penchant for organised horse racing, staging meetings as early as the 1700s. However, it was not until 1892 that the regions passion for equine sports was given a permanent home at Nottingham Racecourse in scenic Colwick Park.
Although racing is a favourite past-time in the United Kingdom in general and the Nottingham region is particular, the Nottingham Racecourse was on the brink of closure a number of times due to mismanagement and difficult conditions. At one point the popularity of National Hunt races was so low that the course decided to take them off the fixture list, turning Nottingham racecourse into a straight Flat racing track. It took the interference of the Racehorse Holdings Trust (RHT) to secure the Nottingham venues future - which turned out a rather bright future. Nottingham Racecourse is today one of the most popular racecourses in the country, and famous for its grandstand and Centenary Stand.
Nottingham Racecourse also stages a number of themed race meetings which are not to be missed for their excellent contenders and sublime entertainment. These special feature days include Rat Pack Night in August, Irish Night in April, and the Nottingham Evening Post Family Fun Day in July.
Bad News: There are no free bus services from Nottingham Station to Nottingham Racecourse. However, the distance of two miles will not be too expensive in a taxi.
From the North Nottingham Racecourse is best approached from the A60 or A612; travellers from the South should come via the A60 or A453; whereas the A52 takes care of those coming from East and West.
Rooftop Restaurant: High up on the second floor of the grandstand, the Rooftop Restaurant guarantees amazing views over the racecourse and winning post, as well as the surrounding Colwick Park. For £62.50 or £64.50 on feature days, you can relax at your private table with a three course lunch or evening meal, a race day programme and admission to the premier enclosure. As this is a popular venue it is advisable to book early.
