Pontefract Racecourse, in West Yorkshire, is a stiff test of both horse and rider. The left-handed circuit is undulating, with a short two-furlong run-in, placing an emphasis on tactical jockeyship.

Pontefract races attracts sizeable crowds for its flat racing days through the summer and the action is always competitive.

There are several listed races hosted at Pontefract Racecourse, from the Pontefract Castle Stakes in June to the Silver Tankard Stakes in October.

Pontefract Races Tips

  • Pontefract Racecourse’s undulations and uphill finish do not suit all horses, so look out for runners with proven course form.
  • In races of five or six furlongs, horses drawn closer to the inside rail can have an advantage.
  • Yorkshire trainers Richard Fahey, Mark Johnston and Tim Easterby all have plenty of winners at Pontefract races but, from further afield, runners from the stables of Sir Michael Stoute and Ralph Beckett should be respected.
