Haydock Races Tips

  • Haydock racing tips depend on the time of year. In the winter, the difficult conditions make it a real test of endurance. Come the spring, it’s all about explosive speed.
  • Haydock races used to have a reputation as one of the hardest Jump courses in the country, but that has softened since the decision to use portable, and more forgiving, fences.
  • If you’re eying up a Haydock race card, over the last 12 months Danny Cook has placed in virtually every Chase event he’s ridden at Haydock races, while no one has trained more winners than William Haggas.

Haydock Racecourse is predominantly flat, but the stiff jumping is an ask on the chase course. There are big fences and it’s a very long straight. You can see quite a few front runners do well at Haydock because it’s quick and there’s not a lot places to catch them once they’ve gone. It’s a high standard of racing there so the pace stays strong from start to finish.

I find the hurdles take a lot of jumping – they’re stiff and come fast so you’re moving on quite quickly. You can see horses switch to the outside because there's enough space to swing out and come round without losing any ground.
