Great Yarmouth Racecourse
Close to the beach and committed to provide excellent Flat racing to its visitors, Great Yarmouth Racecourse is the perfect destination for a day out at the races. The course offers 23 race days per year and prides itself in its great hospitality and entertainment programs. Horses in training for big races at Newmarket Racecourse are often put through their practise paces at events hosted at Great Yarmouth, upping the ante in a number of otherwise not-so-significant races. Once a year Great Yarmouth Racecourse hosts the Eastern Festival in collaboration with the local greyhound track - a race day not to be missed by fans of either persuasion.

History of Great Yarmouth Racecourse
Great Yarmouth has been holding regular race meetings since the 18th century. The first proper racecourse was built in 1810 and saw the military personnel stationed nearby racing their cavalry horses for the entertainment of a random array of spectators. To run with the military origins of the course, a monument was erected in 1819 to honour Corporal Nelson's victorious efforts at Trafalgar.
However, the racecourse we can visit today was only opened in 1921 and has consistently supplied racing aficionados with a venue to indulge in their passion (except for a short break during World War II). More recently the Great Yarmouth Racecourse was acquired by Northern Racing, who immediately set about modernising the venue. In 2004 a new grandstand was added to the facilities, named in Lord Nelson's honour to commemorate not only the win at Trafalgar but also the humble beginnings of horse racing in the town of Great Yarmouth.
