Chelmsford City Racecourse has an interesting history. Opened in 2008 as Great Leighs Racecourse, it soon closed and was reopened under its new name in 2015.
It is an all-weather polytrack course and most of the racing here takes place under floodlights. This attracts evening visitors, who can enjoy excellent hospitality facilities.
The fact that the grandstand is in the middle of the one-mile, left-handed track means, however, that runners are visible to the naked eye only for the final couple of furlongs.
Meetings are held most Thursday evenings and the racing is largely low-grade, though many leading trainers like the course’s sweeping bends and often send very good horses here for preparation races.
