Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup

The Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup is the last and final leg of the Hong Kong Triple Crown; the equivalent of the St. Leger Stakes, the final race of the original English series. The race is open to thoroughbreds of either gender aged three and over. This is a major difference between the Hong Kong Triple Crown and the other world-wide Triple Crown series; as all other editions of this trio of fixtures are open either to thoroughbreds aged three or, in the case of the Macau Triple Crown, aged four only. The Hong Kong Triple Crown is the only Triple Crown series to allow contenders to compete more than once in a lifetime.

The Hong Kong Champions & Chater Cup is held at Sha Tin Racecourse, like its preceding races (the Stewards' Cup and the Hong Kong Gold Cup), and takes place annually in May or early June. The race awards the purse of HK$8 million and is run over a distance of nearly two miles. It is one of the oldest continuously run races of the country, inaugurated in 1870, and has been part of the Triple Crown since the series was introduced in 1992.
