Nunthorpe Stakes

The Nunthorpe Stakes is another feature race of the four-day Ebor Festival, held every August at York Racecourse. The event takes its name from the region of Nunthorpe, which is located north of York Racecourse. An early version of the Nunthorpe Stakes was introduced in 1903; however, it was a 'selling race'. This type of race sees a number of low to medium quality horses competing - and the winner of the race is auctioned off amongst spectators and other contenders' connections. In 1922 the race was officially launched in its current format, which saw it elevated to Group 1 status almost instantly.

Open to thoroughbreds aged two and over, the Nunthorpe Stakes is a sprint race over five furlongs, a short and furious contest. It is one of very few races in the United Kingdom that allows juvenile horses to compete against adult contenders; although it is rare that a juvenile triumphs over the more experienced athletes. The first juvenile to race to victory in the Nunthorpe Stakes was 1953s winner High Treason; since then there have been rare repeat performances of this, including Lyric Fantasy in 1992 and Kingsgate Native in 2007.

Since the race was established, two horses have achieved the amazing feat of winning three consecutive runnings of the Nunthorpe Stakes; Tag End who won in 1928, 1929 and 1930, and the legendary Sharpo, who dominated in 1980, 1981 and 1982. Lester Piggott, quelle surprise, holds to this day the title of winningmost jockey in the Nunthorpe Stakes; winning seven races between 1958 and 1978.

Nunthorpe Stakes Odds and News

3 Aug 2011: Hoof It To The Nunthorpe Stakes For 3 In A Row

The impressive run of Hoof It may well continue right into the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes with connections likely to pay up for the four year old on the back of his recent runs.

Since finishing dead last at Doncaster in September of last year the form turn around has been nothing short of incredible.

He’s run six times after that for four wins and a second, only once finishing out of the placings.

Most recently he’s won in tremendous fashion at York before his Goodwood victory by more than two lengths in the Blue Square Stewards Cup.

Punters are going in on him hard for the Nunthorpe Stakes, his price moving in constantly according to Ladbrokes spokesman David Williams.

“Hoof It’s victory at the weekend is still fresh in the memory. Punters have been quick to back him for the Nunthorpe and his price is collapsing,” he said.

After that win connections refused to confirm him as a starter for the Nunthorpe, but that changed on Tuesday.

David Easterby confirmed that the horse would in principle be supplemented to the tune of £20,000 at the six-day stage on Monday August 13.

“There is no point spending all that money now and him being ill or lame, but the intention is to run,” Easterby said.

“I think everyone could work out it was the obvious race for him. I think the plan would then be to go to Haydock, and then we will decide his backend programme after that.”

His last start run at Goodwood certainly impressed many punters, but it didn’t escape the attention of handicappers either.

He received a rating of  119 from the BHA Handicappers which was explained by sprint assessor Stewart Copeland.

“His rating of 119 is higher than any winning performance in that contest since 2004. Looking at the entries for the race he would be the top rated in the field if he turned up.”

Second in betting remains Sole Power which is about to points off Hoof It at 6 to 1.

He won at 100 to 1 last year and according to trainer Eddie Lynam he’s no long shot in 2011.

“The horse is very well and should run a good race at Tipperary but we feel it’ll really help his cause in the Nunthorpe,” he said.
