5 Jun 2010: Snow Fairy Tale At Epsom Downs – Dunlop’s Oaks Success

Trainer Ed Dunlop celebrated his second Investec Oaks win when Snow Fairy and jockey Ryan Moore proved to be a winning team at Epsom Downs on Friday 4th June.

The fifteen-ladies-showdown that was the Investec Oaks saw Dunlop’s three-year-old filly race to a tough victory well-earned under the classy direction of Moore. Snow Fairy did not have a very promising start, stuck at the back of the field and faced with a seemingly impenetrable phalanx of runners. However, Moore, who is considered one of the calmest and best calculating jockeys currently active, soon spotted a chance to weave his way to the front of the field. Snow Fairy took Moore’s direction perfectly, managing to touch the lead and fight it out in a neck-to-neck final sprint with US-trained Meeznah – a battle which saw Snow Fairy emerge victorious by a neck.

Meeznah, who also struggled in the beginning of the race but was brought back on track by skilled jockey Ted Durcan, held on to her very narrow second place. Trainer David Lanagan felt a sting of disappointment after being able to virtually taste victory, but is pleased with his charge’s second placing – especially at a comparatively long 33-1 odds.

Champion trainer Aidan O’Brien secured a third place with Remember When, ridden by Johnny Murtagh. Remember When fought hard to reach the leaders of the field but ended up crossing the line two lengths behind Meeznah.

Race-favourite Aviate, trained by Henry Cecil and teamed up with jockey Tom Queally, met her limitations when her strength abandoned her in the final furlong. The three-year-old had taken the lead early on in the race but sadly was unable to maintain her speed when the competitors started closing in. Aviate finished with an anti-climactic 7th place – a neck ahead of Kieren Fallon on Johnston’s Bikini Babe.

Second co-favourite Sajjhaa, for whom the Oaks was only her second professional race, was unable to recreate the winning performance she gave in the Panmure Gordon Liverpool Maiden Stakes. Despite best efforts from jockey Frankie Dettori and confidence from trainer Michael Jarvis, the three-year-old was the last to make it across the line.

While Dunlop is celebrating his first Oaks win since the 2004 success of Ouija Board, Ryan Moore is getting ready for the biggest challenge of his Epsom Derby Weekend, the Investec Derby on Saturday. He will be riding Sir Michael Stoute’s Workforce.
