10 Aug 2011: Dunlop Rolls Stars Out Of The 2011 Betfred Ebor

The 2011 Betfred Ebor will run without one of the fancied roughies in Red Cadeaux.

While not at the top of the betting markets the horse was for many a solid chance at longer odds with a definite quality and high level of class when he gets it right on the day.

Instead of running in the Betfred Ebor he will sent across the Channel for an engagement in France.

It will be a definite drop in grade as you would expect when pulling out of Europe’s richest handicap event.

He will instead be at Group 2 level in the Prix Kergorlay at Deauville on August 21.

The Ed Dunlop trained five year old will be hoping to repeat the efforts of last year’s winner Americain who then went on to claim Australia’s richest race, the Melbourne Cup.

Red Cadeaux is set to take plenty of improvement from his last start run where he was 10th on a dry track in the Artemis Goodwood Cup.

The conditions were far from suitable for the stayer and Dunlop says he should have stuck to his guns and not risked the horse.

“I should never have run Red Cadeaux in the Goodwood Cup,” he said.

“The ground was almost good on the eve of the meeting, but in sweltering temperatures it dried up so quickly, and come the Thursday it proved far too fast for Red Cadeaux.  He won’t be running in the Ebor as it would not be fair to ask him to hump 9st 10lb.”

He might not be the only horse missing out on a start in the Ebor with high profile mare Snow Fairy also looking on shaky ground.

She may well end up at the same French racecourse as well with two Group 1′s which seem very suitable on paper.

Already with four top rung titles to her name, Snow Fairy could run in either the Juddmonte International Stakes next Wednesday or Thursday’s Darley Yorkshire Oaks.

There is even a third option if Dunlop decides to hold off and wait for the Group 1 Prix Jean Romanet on August 21.

“The ground will determine where we go, but if it came up soft at York we might well keep Snow Fairy back for Deauville on August 21 in the hope that underfoot conditions would be more suitable for the Prix Jean Romanet, a mile and a quarter race for fillies and mares only,” he said.

“Obviously, we would like to run Snow Fairy at York, where she could either take on the colts in the Juddmonte International or stay with her own sex and run in the Yorkshire Oaks, but it will all depend on the ground as it can sometimes come up soft on the Knavesmire.”

In her last run Snow Fairy proved to be too good for all but one in the Nassau Stakes, Midday forcing her to settle with a second place finish.

“Snow Fairy is very well and looks have improved again since she ran so well against Midday in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood,” Dunlop said.

“I suspected she might as she had been off a long time before she ran in the Eclipse, and she definitely seems to be progressing. We can only hope that she gets her favoured fast ground either at York or in France.”
