York Ebor Festival Juddmonte Day

The first day of the festival plays host to the Goffs Acomb Stakes, the Great Voltigeur Stakes and the Juddmonte International Stakes. The Acomb Stakes, a Group 3 race for two-year-old thoroughbreds, runs over a distance of seven furlongs. The Great Voltigeur Stakes, established in 1950, sees three-year-old thoroughbred colts and geldings compete over a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs in this Group 2 event. The main feature race of the day, the Juddmonte International Stakes, is classed as a Group 1 race and open to thoroughbreds aged three and older. It was once known as the 'Benson & Hedges Cup' but has been named after its sponsor 'Juddmonte Farms' since 1989.

This race is a left-handed 1 mile 2 furlongs 88 yards run on turf for 3-year-olds and up. It was inaugurated in 1972, and it has 3 horses tying for most successful at 2 wins each - Dahlia in 1974 and 1975; Ezzoud in 1993 and 1994; and Halling in 1995 and 1996. The Juddemonte International is the richest race at York, with a purse of £600,000.
