Cheveley Park Stakes

The Cheveley Park Stakes are Newmarket Racecourse's most anticipated all-girls event. The flat race is open to two-year-old fillies only, making it one of the rare Group 1 events to put the spotlight on up-and-coming female equine athletes. Since 1899 the young fillies have been contesting for glory in the Cheveley Park Stakes - which were named after the Newmarket Estate of one Harry McCalmont, Cheveley Park. The race is held at the second day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting, a three day racing festival at Newmarket Racecourse.

Every late September or early October, the two-year-olds flock to Newmarket Racecourse; often to debut in their first Group 1 race on the infamous Rowley Mile. The Cheveley Stakes are considered an unofficial preparatory race for the 1,000 Guineas Stakes, which make up part of the Fillies' Triple Crown. Numerous contenders record double wins at both the Cheveley and the 1,000 Guineas. The first filly to achieve the double win was Pretty Polly in 1903/04; the most recent double winner was Natagora in 2007/08. The race is contested over the sprint distance of six furlongs and is worth a total of £170,000 of prize money.

While no filly is able to compete twice in the Cheveley Park Stakes, one jockey has established himself so firmly as the Cheveley Park Stakes top jockey his record has not been broken in over fifty years. Sir Gordon Richards rode to victory an astounding nine times between 1928 and 1953, yet another notch on his belt of great racing achievements.

17 Apr 2013: Sky Lantern Primed For 1000 Guineas Trial

Popular filly Sky Lantern has the opportunity to stamp herself as a true 1000 Guineas contender with a strong performance in the Nell Gwyn Stakes that will be run at Newmarket today.

Sky Lantern had a strong two-year-old campaign and stamped herself as a horse to watch with a dominant two and a half-length victory in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at Curragh in September.

After an unlucky effort in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies trainer Richard Hannon is hopeful that Sky Lantern can return to the winners circle in today’s race but said she has to run well to be considered a legitimate 1000 Guineas chance.

“She’s been to Kempton and we’re very pleased with her,” Hannon said.

“We going to Newmarket because we think the ground might be a bit better than Newbury and her worst run of last season was on the soft.

“If she is going to win a Guineas she will need to run well.”

Sky Lantern is currently on the fifth line of the 1000 Guineas betting market at Bet365 Bet365 but her odds will likely shorten with a strong performance today.

The biggest threat to Sky Lantern in the Nell Gywn Stakes is expected to be consistent Luca Cumani-trained filly Nargys.

The daughter of Lawman finished second behind Just the Judge in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes and has finished in the top three in each of her race starts.

There has always been a bit of money for Henry Cecil-trained Hot Snap – who will wear the colors made famous by equine superstar Frankel.

The filly has only had one race start, winning a maiden filly’s race at Kempton in September, but is very highly regarded.

Sky Lantern is currently on top of the Nell Gywn Stakes betting market at Bet365 Bet365 at odds of 11/4.

She is followed by Nargys (5/1), Cheveley Park Stakes runner-up Winning Express (8/1) and Lady Nouf (8/1).
