The Cheveley Park Stakes are Newmarket Racecourse's most anticipated all-girls event. The flat race is open to two-year-old fillies only, making it one of the rare Group 1 events to put the spotlight on up-and-coming female equine athletes. Since 1899 the young fillies have been contesting for glory in the Cheveley Park Stakes - which were named after the Newmarket Estate of one Harry McCalmont, Cheveley Park. The race is held at the second day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting, a three day racing festival at Newmarket Racecourse.
Every late September or early October, the two-year-olds flock to Newmarket Racecourse; often to debut in their first Group 1 race on the infamous Rowley Mile. The Cheveley Stakes are considered an unofficial preparatory race for the 1,000 Guineas Stakes, which make up part of the Fillies' Triple Crown. Numerous contenders record double wins at both the Cheveley and the 1,000 Guineas. The first filly to achieve the double win was Pretty Polly in 1903/04; the most recent double winner was Natagora in 2007/08. The race is contested over the sprint distance of six furlongs and is worth a total of £170,000 of prize money.
While no filly is able to compete twice in the Cheveley Park Stakes, one jockey has established himself so firmly as the Cheveley Park Stakes top jockey his record has not been broken in over fifty years. Sir Gordon Richards rode to victory an astounding nine times between 1928 and 1953, yet another notch on his belt of great racing achievements.
