Cesarewitch Handicap

The Cesarewitch Handicap is a famous British flat race hosted annually at Newmarket Racecourse in mid-October. The race is open to thoroughbred race horses aged three years and older and runs over a distance of two miles and two furlongs. Although the better part of the Cesarewitch - as it is known simply in the racing community - takes place on Newmarket's regular race course, the final mile is run on the racecourse's infamous Rowley Mile, lending some historical flavour to this great event.

The Cesarewitch was inaugurated in 1839 and has been running continually ever since. It is named for Tsesarevich Alexander, who became later known as Tsar Alexander II, who made a generous donation of £300 to the Jockey Club - quite a gesture in the early 1800s. The Cesarewitch forms the well-known Autumn Double in alliance with the Cambridgeshire Handicap, which was founded the same year.

With almost 200 years of history behind the Cesarewitch it is no surprise that the race has seen its fair share of horse racing legends. Superstar jockey Lester Piggott rode several winners in the Cesarewitch, including John Cherry in 1976 and Popsi's Joy in 1980. However, the most successful Cesarewitch jockey of all time is currently Doug Smith, who rode six winners at the event between 1939 and 1966, including French Design and Persian Lancer.

The Cesarewitch makes for an especially thrilling event because it usually sports a huge field of runners. The maximum number of starters allowed on the track in an impressive 34 - making the Cesarewitch one of the highlights during Newmarket's Champion's Day.

Cesarewitch Handicap Odds and News

5 Oct 2010: Cesarewitch Handicap 2010 – Odds & Favourites

The Cesarewitch Handicap is one of the feature events on Newmarket’s Champions’ Day, Saturday October 16th, so bookmakers are already competing to offer the best antepost odds. Although the final line-up is yet to be announced, a number of strong favourites are already established amongst the field of prospective runners.

Admiral Barry, trained by Eoin Griffin, is still considered the strongest contenders amongst the Cesarewitch hopefuls. The five-year-old gelding returned to the track in 2010 after a year-long spell, only to run the best season of his career. Out of twelve starts in 2010, Admiral Barry only finished outside the money twice; collecting three victories, four third places and two second places. Admiral Barry won his most recent start, the European Breeders’ Fund Handicap at the Curragh on September 11th, reasserting his authority as a true force on the track.
Admiral Barry is priced 9-1 by Bet365, 10-1 by Betfair and 8-1 by 888Sports.

Another runner to remain a favourite for the Cesarewitch Handicap is Universal Truth. The Dermot Weld-trained gelding has a rather impressive resume of five wins and two third places out of nine career starts; never finishing worse than fourth in his professional career. However, Universal Truth has not raced since July this year, when he burst back onto the scene with a victory in the Topaz Maiden Hurdle, and may be overwhelmed by the competition.
Universal Truth is priced 9-1 by Bet365, 12-1 by Betfair and 8-1 by 888Sports.

Sentry Duty , an eight-year-old French-bred gelding training with Nicki Henderson, is a prospective Cesarewitch contender the bookies are keeping close watch on. Although Sentry Duty has not recorded a win since his triumph in the Freedom Hurdle at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day, he has been showing great improvement in training and on the professional track since he pulled up in the World Hurdle in March. In his last appearance, in the Summer Handicap at Goodwood, Sentry Duty ran to a valiant third place – giving connections and bookmakers hope that he might perform well next weekend at Newmarket.
Sentry Duty is priced 16-1 by Bet365, 25-1 by Betfair and 12-1 by 888Sports.

These three favourites are currently on a shortlist of 59 runners hoping to start in the Cesarewitch Handicap, a race limited to a maximum of 34 starters. As the field narrows down over the next weeks, be aware that the antepost odds on the Cesarewitch are liable to change.
