In 1866 the present location of Newton Abbot Racecourse was purchased by local racing enthusiasts to create a space to celebrate equine sport in the region. The racing took off immediately, growing hugely popular. However, it took quite some time until the racecourse was equipped with the trimmings of a proper racing venue. In 1969 her Majesty the Queen Mother opened the main grandstand at Newton Abbot Racecourse; the corporate facilities were not established until 1990. Today however, Newton Abbot has finally amassed all the mod cons needed to attract passionate racegoers and fans of quaint establishments alike.
Note: A free shuttle bus runs between Newton Abbot Station and the racecourse on race days.
The racecourse can be reached via the A380 which runs south of the M5. There is ample signage and free parking available.
