History of Wetherby Racecourse

Horse racing in the Wetherby area dates back to 1842, when races where held on racing grounds in the neighbouring village of Linton. The Linton location was suitable and popular, and racing may never have been moved to the premises on York Road if it had not been for the greed of the Linton track's owner. When rent on the property was raised in a disproportionate fashion, the racing activity shifted from Linton to Wetherby. The first race on the course we know today was recorded in 1891.

Since its inauguration, Wetherby Racecourse has constantly worked on improving the facilities. The first Grandstand was opened in 1906, terraces were completed in the 1930s; the two-tier stand we still use today was erected in the 1970s, and the track was easily reached by public transport from 1934 to the mid 1960s. In the late fifties the racecourse fell victim to a savage fire, calling for extensive renovations and rebuilding of several sections of the venue. Since 2000, Wetherby Racecourse is the proud home of the Millenium Stand, a state of the art viewing facility which gives the historic racecourse a contemporary edge.
