History of Warwick Racecourse

History is close at hand when visiting Warwick Racecourse, yet another of Great Britain's older racing venues. With the inaugural race recorded in 1707 and evidence of horse racing in the Warwick area from as early as 1694, this is clearly a corner of the world that has earned its horse racing spurs.

In fact, horse racing was introduced to the Warwick area in an effort to obtain funds after a fire had destroyed most of the town. In a sense we can say that Warwick was granted a second lease on life thanks to the sport of horse racing, which explains the deep passion of the locals for this local sport.

Throughout the years Warwick Racecourse has seen its fair share of legends; the most renowned one being iconic jumper Red Rum, who paid a visit to Warwick in 1967. Jockey royalty, such as Lester Piggot, have also frequently performed at the track.
