History of Ripon Racecourse
The Ripon area has conducted organised horse racing events for over 300 years, with the first record of equine competition dating back to 1664. The races were held first on Bondgate Green, followed by a number of different locations for the events. Ripon gained a reputation as a major horse racing force.
In 1723, Ripon's racing scene gained well-deserved notoriety when it played host to the very first race allowing female jockeys to compete.
In 1900 Ripon Racecourse moved to its current location at Boroughbridge Road, and has been an important fixture on the racing scene ever since. Home of a proud Racegoers' Club since the 1960s, Ripon Racecourse was voted 'Best Small Racecourse in the North' in 2003.
