History of Redcar Racecourse

Redcar has been a part of the great British racing tradition since the early 18th century. While the early racing was conducted on the sands of Redcar Beach, the introduction of the Jockey Club regulations in 1870 forced the lively racing scene into a brief retreat as it outlawed racing on sand and ordered a respectable racing arrangement to be made.

In 1872 one Mr John Hikeley and a group of Redcar sportsmen managed to arrange a lease on the premises Redcar Racecourse still resides on today. Although some repairs and additions had to be carried out before racing could begin in earnest, the course was ready for its first race on August 9th 1872. In 1875 Redcar Racecourse became the proud owner of its first proper Grandstand, in 1877 a second stand and improved stabling facilities were added.

Today Redcar Racecourse is a popular destination for its virtue of being a seaside racecourse, a rare and enticing combination.
