History of Newmarket Racecourse

The history of Newmarket Racecourse extends back as far as the history of racing in England. While the first race at Newmarket is recorded in 1622, the establishment of Newmarket as the home of racing did not really occur until Charles II developed a keen interest in horse racing around the 1660s. The Merry Monarch’s obsession with horse racing, and his building of a palace to better accommodate his Newmarket stays, legitimised horse racing in England. Nearly a century after, the Jockey Club first established its rooms at Newmarket, and later Newmarket was the only British racecourse to run races in both World Wars.
