History of Epsom Downs Racecourse
Epsom Downs’ distinguished history spans more than three centuries, and has hosted some of the most memorable events in English racing. The ground has seen countless extensions over the years, with the most recent revealing the new 11,000-seat Duchess Stand.
The 12th Earl of Derby, Edward Smith-Stanley is known for inadvertently creating the Epsom Oaks. In 1788, he organised a race for his friends that became a huge success, and was subsequently made into an annual event.
While it has seen some wonderful races take place, Epsom Downs is also remembered for the deadly protest of 1913. Well known suffragette Emily Davison brought down King George V’s horse, Anmer, in an attempted protest. While she succeeded in her goal to take down the horse, she was also gravely injured, and died four days later.
