Amateur jockey Harry Derham has won the Greatwood Handicap at Cheltenham Racecourse aboard four-year-old Brampour.

Amateur jockey Harry Derham has won the Greatwood Handicap at Cheltenham Racecourse aboard four-year-old Brampour.

Derham, who is just 17-years-old, steered Brampour to win the race by two and a half lengths ahead of second place-getter Olofi.

The young jockey was given the ride by his uncle, Paul Nicholls, who trains Brampour.

“It’s unreal. I’m very, very lucky that Paul and the owners have let me ride this horse,” Derham said.

“I was flat-out all the way but then he picked up.

“Paul has been so good to me, even when I was young, and to do it for him is so unbelievable.”

Nicholls was impressed with his nephew’s magnificent ride.

“It’s a lot to ask of a 17-year-old, but that was some ride,” Nicholls said.

“I always said to him that he’s not going to get chances just because he’s my nephew, but he’s incredibly fit, he works hard, and he’s just one of the lads.

“I thought the horse would come on for his first run, but he’s made a massive improvement.”

Brampour is now expected to run in the Stan James Hurdle next month.

The Punchestown festival is now in full swing with the running of the Punchestown Gold Cup highlighting this Wednesday's racing.

The Punchestown festival is in full swing again with a full card of exciting races set down for Wednesday.

We take a look at the seven races and try to steer you into a winner.

Join Bet365 now and you could receive a £ 200 free bet.

Race 1 (15:40)

The first race of the day sees a capacity field of 28 doing battle in a 2m 4f handicap hurdle. It seems as if the Michael Hourigan trained Warcraft will be tough to beat. Warcraft has been racing in consistent form without being a world beater, however he comes into this very well at the weights in what appears to be a lower grade than he has been racing against lately. Captain Paulie has also met with good support following an impressive win at Cork last start. Quiet Thought and Steele’s Rock are the best of the rest.

Race 2 (16:20)

The second race of the day is a 2m hurdle featuring a field of 13 runners. Ruby Walsh and Paul Nicholls will combine for what is just about the bet of the day. Empire Levant has yet to miss a place in its three career starts, which included a win over the highly rated Palawi. Empire Levant may come up short odds, but no one ever went broke backing winners. Expect Empire Levant to find his feet against the other four year olds and win easy, with the best outsiders being Kalann and Total Reality.

Race 3 (16:55)

Race three of the day is a very open 3m Grade 2 Novice Hurdle. The Willie Mullins trained Bishopsfurze will enter the race as favourite following impressive wins at Thurles and Clonmel. He was disappointing when beaten by 9 lengths last start by Hidden Cyclone. However that race has produced two subsequent winners, which bodes well for Bishopsfurze. Battle Group looks the obvious testing material after a strong win during the Aintree carnival. Expect these two to be battling it out in the home straight with Lambro the best of the outsiders.

Race 4 (17:30)

It’s all about quality, not quantity in this year’s Punchestown Gold Cup. Paul Nicholls will saddle up jumping royalty in Kauto Star for the Grade 1 event. Kauto Star is coming off a third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup behind Long Run. Prior to that he was also third behind Long Run in the King George VI chase. If Kauto Star can regain his best form he will win easily, but expect him to be short odds here. Kempes appears to be the main danger to Kauto Star, following a good win at Aintree during the carnival. Having said that Kauto Star finished five lengths ahead of Kempes in the King George VI chase, illustrating the gap in class between the two. Kauto Star should be winning here from Kempes with Nacarat the best of the outsiders.

Get the best odds on Kauto Star with Bet365

Race 5 (18:05)

The short priced favourites keep coming in race 5 with Waheeb expected to be prohibitive odds in the 2m flat race. The four year old by Elusive Quality is unbeaten in its three race starts, and Dermot Weld has it in excellent shape coming into this. Waheeb won his last start by 7 lengths, running impressive time in doing so. If McNamara can get him to settle, Waheeb will be too strong for these. Steps to Freedom is a winner of two from three, however he has not raced in almost a year and may need this run to get back to full fitness. Of the rest Lovethehigherlaw has the right sort of form to pull off an upset.

Race 6 (18:40)

Race six will be a 2m 4f Grade A Chase for horses aged over five. In what shapes an intriguing betting race we have Willie Mullins/Ruby Walsh combination on top with Scotsirish. Scotsirish has been racing in superior grade to this and gets his big chance to win a race. The top weight is a concern but if he can find his best he will be figuring in the finish. Carrigmartin comes into the race with solid form and the consistent jumper will put himself in a good position to win the race. The French horse Osana has also been racing well and could find enough to win this race. Undoubtedly the toughest race of the day.

Race 7 (19:15)

A capacity field of 28 runners will see out the day. The best tip for this is race is pick winners early in the day, because it will be very hard to get out on the last. Of the 28 runners only three have ever saluted the winning post. However we will look outside the horses that have won for a tip. Faha, who has had just one career start, finishing second behind Clouded Thoughts at Clonmel. Faha went around at odds of 5/2 at his first race start and was beaten by a length. Hopefully whatever the punters saw in him before that race produces itself today. Ballysteen is one of the few in the race who knows what it takes to salute the judge and he could do so here. Lisdaleen is another who has won, and it could be a knock-out player. This is a tough race but the big field should mean bettors are getting inflated odds.

Hot on the heels of another memorable Aintree festival, Sunday racing heats up this weekend with meetings from Ludlow, Ascot and Wincanton.

Six races from Ludlow on Sunday will again be over the jumps. At this stage the track for Ludlow has been graded as good, so expect a fair racing surface for all horses. The pick of the races for the day seems to be the 16:40 Handicap Chase. This race will see a field of 15 tackle the 2 mile, 4 furlong course. In this race expect the Nigel Twiston-Davies trained Patman Du Charmil to race well. The nine year old gelding has won his last two starts by 12 and 5 lengths and looks to be racing in great form. Quilinton and Roi De Rose are also given chances.

Bet365 have the complete Sunday odds available now.

Racing also returns to Ascot on Sunday, where there will be a seven race card, with all races taking place over the jumps. The track for Sunday’s Ascot meeting has been graded good, with the track being firm in places. The highlight of the day will be the Ascot Veterans Handicap Chase where a field of 13 horses, all aged over ten will battle it out over the 3 miles. This is a wide open race, however respect must be shown to the Paul Nicholls trained Blu Teen, who has been racing in top form of late. Blu Teen has not missed a place in his last five runs and seems to be well in at the weights here. Also given chances are Pak Jack and the Nicky Henderson trained Wogan.

There will also be racing at Wincanton on Sunday, where there will be a six event card with all races taking place over the jumps. The feature event of the day will be the Class 3 Handicap Chase over 2 miles. Expect the classy five year old Bedarra Boy to start favourite in this event. The flashy gelding was an impressive winner at its last start, taking a class 4 chase event by 15 lengths. Bedarra Boy has been racing in good form and should be the testing material here. Chances are also given to Fiftyonefiftyone and Marodima.

Paul Nicholls has moved to deny reports that his star pair Kauto Star and Denman could be retired. The pair, which finished first and second in the 2008 and 2009 Cheltenham Gold cups, will race on despite 2011 being one of Nicholls leanest years at the Cheltenham festival.

Many had predicted that Kauto Star would be retired following its failure to capture a third Cheltenham Gold cup. However these reports proved to be premature with Nicholls confirming that his charge will continue to race a 12 year old.

Kauto Star, who is also a four time winner of the Grade 1 King George IV Chase, was beaten home by Long Run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. However Nicholls has confirmed that he plans to race his star again, possibly as early as May at Punchestown.

Kauto Star has an impressive race record with 21 wins and 11 minor placings from 37 races.

Perhaps the call for Kauto Star to be retired is being led by punters that backed him in the King George IV chase as 4/7 favourite, only to see him fall and not finish the race.

Did you back Kauto Star in the King George? Join Ladbrokes now and get a free £60

Nicholls also quashed any thoughts that his other stable star, Denman would be retired. Denman finished four lengths second behind Long Run in the King George IV stakes, and despite well below his best, Nicholls confirmed that his charge would be back on the track after a short layoff.

Despite having not won a race since November 2009, the 11 year old Denman has only missed a placing three times in 23 races.

Also on the comeback from the Cheltenham festival are Menorah and Peddlers Cross. Menorah was sent out a 3/1 second favourite in the Champion Hurdle however it could only manage fifth behind Hurricane Fly. Trainer Phillip Hobbs believed that Menorah did not race truly in the Champion hurdle and he is currently looking at the Punchestown festival in May as likely come back point for Menorah.

Peddlers Cross also comes out of the Champion Hurdle. Despite having its unbeaten string of seven bought to an end by Hurricane Fly, Peddlers cross ran a gallant second. Trainer Donald McCain will continue with his plans to race the six year old gelding in the Aintree festival.

In other news, Binocular, who was ante-post favourite for the Champion Hurdle will also make a comeback at either the Aintree or Punchestown festivals. Trainer Nicky Henderson confirmed that the horse is on the comeback trail, but that hard ground at Punchestown made it more likely that the winner of the Grade One William Hill Christmas Hurdle will be back on deck for the Aintree carnival.

Championed jumper One Of The Boys has been shouting trainer Tim Vaughn quite a season with three runner-ups and one third place recorded in 2010 so far. Connections believe the gelding is more than capable of winning this afternoons event after doing outstanding in training and well on the track. The only thing that could stand between One Of The Boys and his elusive win is Courella, trained by Evan Williams. This outstanding steeple chaser won the Pepsi Pursuit Novices’ Handicap Chase at Fontwell 19th August 2010, showing remarkable control and ability.
