Newmarket plays host to an eight race meeting today where the track has been graded as Good to Firm.

The feature of the day at Newmarket is the Tattersalls Millions 3yo Trophy. Worth £ 250 000, this race features some of the up and coming stars who will be looking to assert themselves ahead of the classic races.

The Aiden O’Brien trained filly Together comes into the race having not raced since November, when she was taken to America to contest the Breeders Cup Fillies Mile. Being an astute horseman O’Brien would not have sent the filly across the Atlantic if he was not confident in her ability. 7/2 looks a good price about the classy filly who should be too strong for these. Measuring Time and Questioning appear to be the only real threats.

Bet on all the Newmarket action now with Bet365

Cheltenham plays host to some very competitive racing today with some big fields going around. The best bet on the Cheltenham card appears to be the Nicky Henderson trained Bai Zhu, in the Class 2 Handicap Chase, scheduled for 15:55.

Bai Zhu was an impressive winner at his last start when he dug deep in the final stages to overhaul Winterwood at Newbury. Bai Zhu has now had two starts back since taking an extended break and should be ready to fire at Cheltenham today.

Beverly will play host to a seven race card where the going is good to firm. There are a number of tough races at Beverly today but the best bet of the day appears to come in the fourth race of the day, Class 3 Handicap.

Kingscroft comes into the race having won four of its last six starts, with two minor placing’s. The Mark Johnson trained gelding will be around the 9/2 mark and looks to be great value.

Kempton will host seven race card today and the going is standard on the all-weather surface. There is not a great deal of depth in the Kempton meeting but it looks like Class 4 Handicap for three year old fillies is the pick of the races. Never Never Land is coming off a long break, but it showed enough last year to suggest it will have the measure of these. Khaleeji and Flynn’s boy are the main dangers.

Finally we turn our attention to Sedgefield, where the going is good to firm for the seven race card. The best race of the day at Sedgefield is the 18:255 Novice Chase Qualifier. A field of eight will tackle the 2m 5f course, and the Freddy Murphy trained Hollo Ladies looks like it will be hard to hold out.

Hollo Ladies last went around in the Grade 2 Novices’ Chase at Aintree during the carnival, and while he wasn’t able to win he showed enough to suggest he will handle this easier grade. 7/4 may sound prohibitive but he is the class runner of the field and should salute.

Ground frost and snowfall have put a stop to this Monday’s (2nd February 2010) planned jump fixtures at both Kempton and Ludlow race course.

Although temperatures are expected to rise above freezing point in the course of the day at both locations, several nights of sub-zero temperatures have left the tracks hard and too treacherous to take chances with the planned competitions.

While the last two winters in the United Kingdom are proving harsher than usual, the frost problem is not a new issue to those involved in the races. Since 2002 over 25% of race meeting cancellations were called due to frost, causing significant losses of revenue for the industry and the bookmaking profession. Between November 2008 and January 2009 32 race meetings met their match in overnight frost and it appears the new winter racing season is facing the same, if not extremer challenges.
The sole surviving race on Monday 2nd February 2010 is the Wolverhampton Fast Cards Flat racing fixture, which stays true to its reputation as an all-weather-event.
