Caspar Netscher will be tackling the mile for only the second time in his career in Saturday’s race, with his first run resulting in an eighth place finish from a bad barrier draw.

Trainer Alan McCabe is confident the horse will be in top form for the 2012 Qipco 2000 Guineas this weekend.

“Caspar Netscher has been in good form since Newbury and he did it nicely that day – I’m happy with him,” McCabe said.

“Going into the race he was where I wanted him and he did it accordingly.

“He has definitely come on for the run and I hope he has got further improvement left in him.

“We are going into unknown territory in regards to trip, but we are going there in very good nick and Shane Kelly will ride.”

Caspar Netscher will have to contend with the likes of Bronterre in the 2012 Qipco 2000 Guineas.

Bronterre finished behind Caspar Netscher in his most recent start in the Greenham, however, trainer Richard Hannon believes his horse can turn the tables this time around.

“He’s a horse we like a lot, a class horse, and capable of better,” Hannon said.

“We were very disappointed with him at Newbury but we are still going to run him.

“He’s much better than that.”

The first win came from Marie Deja La, who won the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Handicap Hurdle.

The win came after her last start at the track where she dislodged rider Tom Cannon at the final hurdle, despite looking a sure winner of the race.

“It was just one of those things last time – nine times out of 10 Tom would have stayed on,” Gordon said.

“It’s our local track and this is our best season. We’ve been going for four years and four months and the best we’d done before was 16 two years ago.

“Marie Deja La belongs to the owners’ club and will go to the sales in April. She’s a good, fun mare.”

Gordon was not the only trainer to taste success at Fontwell yesterday, with Alison Batchelor scoring with Try Catch Me in the Brighton Handicap Chase.

“He has run over three and two miles six, and we thought we should try something different and drop back in trip,” Batchelor said.

“He worked very well in blinkers, so we tried that too, and he’s won really well. It’s taken a while to get to know him, as if you look at him, you’d think he’d stay a trip.”

The Cadoudal gelding has now won 16 races in a row and has claimed an unbelievable four World Hurdle titles.

Trainer Paul Nicholls was thrilled with the result.

“Apart from Rock On Ruby, Cheltenham had been a disaster,” said Nicholls.

“I had told everybody we’d had this cough and although the older horses seem OK, a lot were running badly.

“This was the one race of the whole week I wanted to win more than anything.

“I want to win the Gold Cup with Kauto Star, but just having him here is a privilege and I wanted to win this race for Andy and for racing really.

Second favourite at Bet365, Kauto Star, is now in doubt for the race after falling during schooling last week.

Trainer Paul Nicholls is devastated by the setback, but believes in keeping the public up to date with Kauto Star’s situation each and every step of the way.

“There is no easy way to say this, but Kauto Star is only 50-50 to make the Cheltenham Gold Cup after a fall schooling,” Nicholls announced today via his online blog.

“As a trainer, it is all too easy to sit on information when it comes to your horses.

“They have so many minor worries, niggles and setbacks – most of which turn out to be nothing of long-term importance – that you could be constantly updating on each of your string, to the press and the public, on an hourly, daily and weekly basis.”

Nicholls was hopeful that Kauto Star could beat last year’s winner Long Run in the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The trainer is now only 50% certain that the horse will take his place in the race, describing the twelve-year-old gelding as “sore”.

“I am sad to report that his participation at the Cheltenham Festival is in doubt,” he said.

Kauto Star won both his starts last preparation in the Grade 1 Haydock Park Betfair Chase and the Kempton Park William Hill King George VI Chase.

The Villiage Star gelding has won 19 of his 32 career starts in total, including three over the flat.

Kauto Star has won more than £4.3 million in prize money and was hoping to add to that total in the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup.

While many cases have been clear cut over the last few weeks and months the Mackay incident is one that doesn’t fit that mould.

His horse Stars In Your Eyes swung right to the outside fence during its eventual winning run and it was visible seen banging into it at various stages.

Mackay argued that had he not used his whip he risked ploughing through the fence and as such it was a safety precaution he had to take.

Stewards agreed with him in part however they only took one of his ten strikes off because of it.

That left him still two strikes over the limit and will mean he’s off the track from February 27 – March 3 and March 5 – March 8.

A clearly annoyed Mackay didn’t hold back with his assessment of what transpired.

“I feel there was not much more I could do. I hit the horse ten times, but in the circumstances I thought I was in danger of going through the fence,” he said.

“Coming to the first bend I thought I was going to go down the seven furlong chute and then again coming up the home straight she was violently hanging. If they can’t overlook that what chance have you got?

“I don’t know how bad it actually has to be for them to let you off or override it. Do you have to go through the fence for them to overlook it?

“I hit the fence a few times and I feel that I was using my whip to correct the filly.”

His spray then went to the next level as he personally attacked the men who’ve suspended him.

“They are sitting in there handing out days but half of them have never ridden a horse so they don’t know,” he said.

“I knew that I had gone over my limit but I wasn’t too bothered as I thought they would overlook it and I would get off with it. I am very disappointed with the stewards.”

Simon Cowley defended the stewards decision saying his extra whipping had no effect on correcting the horse.

“We took into account how difficult a ride this was for Nicky particularly early on in the race but even bearing that in mind when he used his stick in the home straight the problem that presented itself to us what his use of the stick did not appear to have any effect,” he said.

Mackay seems to have plenty of support from the public on this one with polls showing more than 80% of punters believe he was unfairly treated.

Some have even gone as far as declaring it the ride of the day and one that deserved praise from the stewards.

The racecourse is currently frosted over in a number of places, leading the race club to cover the entire track in protective fleeces.

Clerk of the course, Tim Long, said the race club was trying desperately to frost out the track.

“We’re doing everything that we can,” Mr Long said yesterday.

“Although we are due another frost on Thursday night, if the Met Office forecast for a weather front with rain later on Friday is correct then we’ve got a good chance.”

Sandown Racecourse is also in danger of losing their jumps program tomorrow due to the same weather front.

Sandown director of racing, Andrew Cooper, said they had found evidence of frost on the racetrack.

“We need to be taking stock of where we’ve got to,” Mr Cooper said.

“There is frozen ground in a few places under the covers as of today, not significant, but enough to raise alarm bells.

“They are not going to shift that readily and with another cold night forecast let’s see what that brings and take it from there.”
