Ffos Las are fighting against the weather as they attempt to hold their big humps fixture tomorrow February 4, 2012, which includes the Welsh Championship Hurdle.

The racecourse is currently frosted over in a number of places, leading the race club to cover the entire track in protective fleeces.

Clerk of the course, Tim Long, said the race club was trying desperately to frost out the track.

“We’re doing everything that we can,” Mr Long said yesterday.

“Although we are due another frost on Thursday night, if the Met Office forecast for a weather front with rain later on Friday is correct then we’ve got a good chance.”

Sandown Racecourse is also in danger of losing their jumps program tomorrow due to the same weather front.

Sandown director of racing, Andrew Cooper, said they had found evidence of frost on the racetrack.

“We need to be taking stock of where we’ve got to,” Mr Cooper said.

“There is frozen ground in a few places under the covers as of today, not significant, but enough to raise alarm bells.

“They are not going to shift that readily and with another cold night forecast let’s see what that brings and take it from there.”

Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni is undoubtedly in the pole position ahead of this Friday’s running of the UAE 1000 Guineas.

Just seven horses were nominated for the first Classic of the UAE season and Al Zarooni is responsible for two of them.

They’re not just hopes either with both Gamilati and Pimpernel considered race favourites.

Gamilati comes in off a big win in the 7f preview race while Pimpernel ran second in the 2011 Group 2 Rockfel Stakes and then won the Listed Radley Stakes.

Pimpernel will have a change of rider from both those starts though with Frankie Dettori to stick with Gamilati who he won with at his past two starts.

Zarooni says both horses are in with a shot but purely in terms of fitness he’s leaning towards Gamilati.

“They are both very nice fillies with very good form in Europe but Gamilati has that run under her belt this year and has proved herself on the Meydan Tapeta,” he said.

“Mickael Barzalona will ride Pimpernel and they should both run well but that race fitness does suggest Gamilati is our best chance.”

One of the major threats to Al Zarooni will be Alsindi which finished second to her three weeks back in the trial race.

Jockeys are still expressing concerns over the implementation of the new whip rules in British racing.

The concerns were raised after jockey Will Kennedy was banned for seven days and lost a portion of his prize money when breaking the new rules aboard Swincombe Flame at Kempton last weekend.

Professional Jockeys Association chief executive Kevin Darley is looking forward to a scheduled meeting with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) this Friday.

“We will participate in and contribute to the review group meeting on Friday – which has been scheduled for some time – and make constructive suggestions on the best way forward,” Darley said.

“Jockeys have a number of ongoing concerns about the rules as they stand and are committed to working in a positive way with the regulator to address them.

“In particular, we do not believe that additional discretion for the stewards – which the BHA outlined in November – is being used sufficiently. There have been examples since the latest amendments to the rules when Jockeys believe discretion could have been used, but it has not been.

“There are also concerns about the way in which some of the rules are being implemented and we will make those points on Friday.

“There are still challenges to be overcome and Jockeys collectively will continue to work positively and constructively with the BHA to resolve these issues.”

As the whip saga continues to dominate the majority of racing talk across the UK key stakeholders have decided enough is enough.

This Friday a meeting will be held between the Professional Jockeys Association and BHA where both sides are expected to agree that the issue cannot remain the number one story in horse racing for any longer.

The fact is though unless both parties can agree on a solution that is exactly what will happen.

The issue again rose its hea don Saturday when William Kennedy copped a seven day ban and lost his prize-money after winning at Kempton on Swincombe Flame.

This is just after Thursdays horror day where seven jockeys copped a combined 93 days suspension.

It will be the number one issue for Paul Bittar who will join the BHA as chief executive just two days earlier.

For the PJA it will again be Kevin Darley in charge as he desperately seeks a win befor ehe leaves as chief executive.

Steve Drowne, a joint-president of the PJA, said: “It is worrying that all the good things going on in racing are being overshadowed by the whip issue.”

John Maxse spoke on behalf of the BHA and his words won’t fill people with hopes of a fast resolution.

“On Friday we’ll be having our first sit-down meeting since the changes were introduced,” he said.

It’s not surprising then that no immediate rule changes are expected.

Whatever happens though both parties need to be aware that this can ill afford to drag on any longer.

There were similar initial problems when whip regulations were brought into Australia but racing there has barely had an issue since people decided to move on with things.

One thing we can be glad of is that the racing itself continues to b as strong as ever.

Bet365 has had a string of fantastic results from punters who are taking advantage of their industry leading odds.

Australian trainer Peter Snowden has put the UK on notice ahead of his star colt Sepoy’s arrival later this year.

Snowden has overseen Sepoy’s tremendous success in Australia and will follow him to the Dubai world cup meeting before he’s handed over to Godolphin.

Sepoy was recently rated 123 by the WTR and was named the world champion three year old sprinter.

He runs in the Golden Shaheen in Dubai after a short Aussie lead in then it’s Europe he’ll try and conquer.

Snowden says Sepoy is at the forefront in a dominant period for Aussie racing.

“It’s great and I’m very proud of it,” Snowden said.

“It’s very, very pleasing to see for us and it’s great for Australian horses. Black Caviar, she was rated the best sprinter in the world so it says a lot for our racing.

“Mark Kavanagh’s filly (Atlantic Jewel) got a mention as well. That’s pretty good for three horses from Australia to get up in their category.

“It’s very pleasing for the breeding industry as well as the racing fraternity, because it just puts us up there on the map. But we’ve got more to do yet. We’re not finished yet.”

Sepoy has been working faultlessly ahead of his Oakleigh Plate start in Melbourne.

If he’s successful there it will be his fifth Group 1 win in only a short racing career so far.

“I’m very happy with him – he’s starting to do fast work so it won’t be long now,” Snowden said.

“He’ll probably trial in three or four weeks. Everything is ticking along well.”

While he’s still a world away there’s nothing to stop European punters getting on the Sepoy bandwagon right now.

Richard Hughes is preparing to launch a thorough defence against a charge of ‘foul riding’ levelled against him in India.

Hughes was riding in Mumbai on New Year’s Day when the incident occurred and he is facing both a fine and ban if found guilty.

The controversy arises from a strange situation where Hughes deliberately elbowed a rival jockey during the sixth race of the day.

The top English rider though claims he was acting purely in self defence and was attempting to ensure the safety of both himself and his mount Star Trainer.

He says the other jockey maliciously tried to push him over the inside running rail.

“I was stuck on the rails and he kept coming and kept coming so I stuck my elbow out to stop me going over the rails,” Hughes said.

Stewards disagreed though and he was found guilty of a charge of foul riding.

Hughes has been given until Thursday to prepare a defence for stewards.

The report coming out of the meeting reads as follows:

“Having heard the submissions made and having viewed the video recording of the race, the stewards were not satisfied with the explanation tendered by jockey R Hughes and held him guilty of foul riding on his mount Star Trainer. However, before taking a decision in the matter, the stewards wished to give jockey R Hughes one more opportunity to defend himself and hence adjourned the hearing to Thursday, 5 January.”

While there may be plenty of conjecture over in India at home in the UK there’s simply no argument about which is the best bookmaker.
