Owner Paul Duffy is thrilled to have fierce competition for his talented jumper Diamond Harry in the 2011 William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton Racecourse on Boxing Day.

Owner Paul Duffy is thrilled to have fierce competition for his talented jumper Diamond Harry in the 2011 William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton Racecourse on Boxing Day.

Diamond Harry is in the midst of a campaign that Duffy is hopeful will culminate in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The owner’s only query going into the King George VI Chase on December 26, 2011, is the way of going.

“The question is will he go right-handed round Kempton as he’s always gone left-handed before,” said Duffy.

“That’s not because we’ve avoided going the other way round. That’s the way it’s turned out.

“We don’t know the answer. He jumps straight enough, but he might prefer a galloping track like Haydock and Newbury. Kempton’s a tighter track.”

Duffy is hoping the track will have a bit of give come Saturday’s King George VI Chase.

“He’d obviously like the ground to be soft. If it is, it would suit him. The ground might be good to soft, I’d expect, but we don’t know,” he said.

“Ultimately if he gets placed behind horses like Kauto Star, Master Minded and Long Run, and if he finishes close up to them, then you’d say he’s run well.”

The owner said he was extremely grateful to have a horse as talented as Diamond harry.

“It’s a dream having a horse good enough to run in races like this. Anything he does is a bonus because we are still aiming at the Gold Cup,” Duffy said.

“We still hope to go for that, but we’re taking one race at a time for our old friend and let’s just hope he gets around safely and does himself justice.”

Amateur jockey Harry Derham has won the Greatwood Handicap at Cheltenham Racecourse aboard four-year-old Brampour.

Amateur jockey Harry Derham has won the Greatwood Handicap at Cheltenham Racecourse aboard four-year-old Brampour.

Derham, who is just 17-years-old, steered Brampour to win the race by two and a half lengths ahead of second place-getter Olofi.

The young jockey was given the ride by his uncle, Paul Nicholls, who trains Brampour.

“It’s unreal. I’m very, very lucky that Paul and the owners have let me ride this horse,” Derham said.

“I was flat-out all the way but then he picked up.

“Paul has been so good to me, even when I was young, and to do it for him is so unbelievable.”

Nicholls was impressed with his nephew’s magnificent ride.

“It’s a lot to ask of a 17-year-old, but that was some ride,” Nicholls said.

“I always said to him that he’s not going to get chances just because he’s my nephew, but he’s incredibly fit, he works hard, and he’s just one of the lads.

“I thought the horse would come on for his first run, but he’s made a massive improvement.”

Brampour is now expected to run in the Stan James Hurdle next month.

2011 Cheltenham World Hurdle Preview.

Big Buck’s will attempt to make it three wins in consecutive years when he lines up in the Grade 1 Ladbrokes World Hurdle at Cheltenham on Thursday.

Having won the race in 2009 and 2010 Big Buck’s will attempt to create history by becoming the first horse to win the race three years in a row.

Having won its last ten consecutive races, Big Buck’s will go around at even money odds and is sure to be one of the shortest priced favourites of the Cheltenham carnival.

Ruby Walsh, who has not ridden Big Buck’s at its last two starts will be back in the saddle on Thursday and will be looking to create his own piece of history by becoming the first jockey to win the World Hurdle three times in a row.

Do you think Big Buck’s can race into equine immortality? Join Ladbrokes today for your chance to receive £60 in free bets.

Grands Crus looks the most likely to cause and upset and has been a clear second pick in the betting at 3/1. The lightly raced six year old, who is the winner of four from six over the jumps was a last winner over the three mile journey at Cheltenham at should prove to be the biggest threat to Big Buck’s.

Grands Crus has won his last two starts by ten lengths and is gaining support to end the run of Big Buck’s in the World Hurdle. Although none of the horses he has beaten are anywhere near the class of Big Buck’s, such has been his dominance in these wins that many are predicting the David Pipe trained gelding to be Big Buck’s sternest test to date.

Irish trainer Willie Mullins will saddle up two horses in an attempt to win his first World Hurdle. Mourad (10/1) and Fiveforthree (14/1) are the two best backed runners outside of the two favourites.

Mourad has won his last two starts in Grade 2 hurdles after coming back from a long break. He is also Grade 1 placed in a three mile hurdle event.

Fiveforthree was an impressive four length winner last start at Punchestown. Although competing in a lower grade it was his first start in almost two years. As a Grade 1 hurdle winner over the three miles you cannot rule him out, however it is hard to see him beating the favourites who have a significant fitness edge over him.

Such is the dominance of Big Buck’s, there are nine horses ranked 33/1 or longer. Of the long-shots Restless Harry looks the one best placed for an upset. He has run third behind race favourites Big Buck’s and Grands Crus at his previous two starts. He looks a place chance at best.

Do you think one of the longshots can cause what would be the upset of the carnival? Join Ladbrokes today for your opportunity to claim £60 in free bets.

Although there is never a sure thing on a race track it is worth noting that favourites have an enviable record in this race. Since the year 2000 seven horses that were odds on in the betting have won.

The 2011 edition of the Champion Hurdle sees a field of 11 top quality hurdlers go around in what is the final leg of the Stan James Road to Cheltenham.

2010 champion Binocular has been ruled out of the race after it was revealed that a drug used to cure a skin condition did not leave its system in time, and he would have been at risk of returning a positive swab.

We are left with an eleven horse field to contest the Grade One classic which kicks off the Cheltenham carnival of racing.

Three horses stand out in the betting with Menorah (10/3), Hurricane Fly (7/2) and the undefeated Peddlers Cross (4/1) dominating the market.

The Philip Hobbs trained Menorah is a slight favourite for the 2011 champion hurdle. Menorah has won 6 of 9 starts and finished second in its other three starts. As a three time winner over the course and distance the team has every right to be confident.

Hurricane Fly will race outside of Ireland for the first time in a bid to make it five straight wins. Going to Cheltenham for the first time is a concern, however winning form is good form and he has won 7 of 8 at this journey.

Peddlers Cross puts its undefeated streak on the line in the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle. Winner of the grade one Fighting Fifth last year, Peddlers Cross maintained its perfect record by winning at Kelso by 11 lengths on February 17.

Fancy one of the favourites? Join Bet365 now and receive a free bet of up to £200.

Of the other runners Dunguib and Oscar Whiskey have attracted some support, both ranking as 8/1 chances. Dunguib was a first up winner over 2 miles, however it is hard to see it turning the tables on Hurricane Fly, who finished 15 lengths ahead of Dunguib the last time the two met.

After having ante-post favourite Binocular scratched Nicky Henderson will saddle up Oscar Whiskey. Oscar Whiskey is the winner of six from seven career starts and could represent value as his only career start in a grade one saw him finish four lengths behind Menorah in last year’s Grade one Supreme novice hurdle over the Champion hurdle track and distance.

The other runners are quoted at double figure odds, with last year’s runner-up, Khyber Kim listed as an 11/1 outsider. After starting in the Christmas hurdle as a 5/2 shot, punters have shied away from the Nigel Twiston Davis trained horse as he finished some 13 lengths back at his previous start.

The other runners are Millie Chief (16/1), Thousand Stars (20/1), Overturn (40/1), Clerks Choice (50/1) and Bygones of Bird is rated a 250/1 chance. It is hard to see these runners overcoming their more fancied rivals, however there is no such thing as a sure thing on a race track.

After four days of merciless competition, the Cheltenham Festival is proud to present its most successful jockeys of the year. Of the hopeful riders who arrived at Cheltenham on Tuesday 16th March, seven leave with their heads held high – but one man’s head can be just a little bit higher.
Ruby Walsh, the jockey everyone was watching from the very first race, has been named as the most successful jockey of the festival for the fourth time in five years. Walsh also now holds the record of most career wins at the Cheltenham Festival, bringing his total to 27 over the former record of 25 held by legendary Arkle jockey Pat Taaffe. The Cheltenham Festival 2010 brought Walsh three victories – on Quevega, Big Buck’s and Sanctuaire – which is a comparatively low number for his extraordinary standards. Last year saw Walsh ride seven winners; this year seemed almost cursed in spite of his obvious success. His three wins were matched by three falls, on Gold Cup favourite Kauto Star, Quel Esprit and tragically and fatally on Citizen Vic.
Barry Geraghty also rode three winners over the last four days: Soldatino, Big Zeb and Spirit River; making him a worthy runner up to the most successful Festival jockey of all time. Geraghty and Walsh are the only riders to manage three wins at this year’s Cheltenham Festival.
However, the two jockeys are closely followed by a group of five who have piloted two horses to victory over the course of the meeting. Amongst them is Ruby Walsh’s sister Katie, who – although riding as an amateur – won both of her starts at Cheltenham, on Poker De Sivola and Thousand Stars. Katie Walsh joins Tony Mc Coy, who rode to victory on Alberta’s Run and Binocular; Paddy Brennan, jockey to winners Imperial Commander and Pigeon Island – both on the last day of the Festival; Richard Johnson, who won the meetings first race on Menorah and scored a win on Copper Bleu; and finally Andrew Lynch, riding first across the line on sizing Europe and Berties’ Dream.

While trainer Nicky Henderson seemed a sure and almost untouchable candidate for the title of top trainer at the Cheltenham Festival, he was faced with stiff competition when Nigel Twiston-Davies celebrated an astonishing three wins on the last day of the meeting. In the end it was the four second places won by his charges that gave Henderson the edge over Twiston Davies.
During the four days of the Festival both trainers recorded three first placings: Henderson trained winners Binocular, Soldatino and Spirit River; Twiston-Davies’ first places were achieved by Pigeon Island, Baby Run and Imperial Commander. Extraordinarily, all of Twiston-Davies’ wins occurred in the last few hours on the last day of the Festival and included the coveted Gold Cup. The second places fell to Henderson stable-mates Burton Port, Carole’s Legacy, French Opera and Radium; whereas Khyber Kim was the only Twiston-Davies-trained contender to win a second place.
The triple winning trainers were closely followed by Paul Nicholls, David Pipe, Donald McCain, Willie Mullins and Philip Hobbs; who had two winners each amongst their charges. Nicholls trained winners Big Buck’s and Sanctuaire; Pipe celebrated the wins of Buena Vista and Great Endeavour; Peddlers Cross and Ballabriggs ran to victory for McCain; Mullins watched his charges Thousand Stars and Quevega cross the line first; and Menorah and Copper Bleu managed to snatch two trophies for Hobbs.
