Happy Trails Lines up Cox Plate after Claiming Turnbull

The Group One Cox Plate is now the target of Happy Trails after the classy colt claimed an upset victory in the Group One Turnbull Stakes at Australia’s Flemington Racecourse this past Saturday.

Melbourne Cup and pre-Turnbull favourite Puissance De Lune looked to have the race sewn up after receiving a great run in transit and pulling clear of Fawkner in the final 200 metres before Happy Trails snuck through the middle of the field to record his second Group One victory.

Trainer Paul Beshara has always thought of Happy Trails as a leading Cox Plate Contender and is now even more confident heading into the Australian weight-for-age Championship at Moonee Valley Racecourse in less than three weeks’ time.

“He is a magnificent horse; he is like my brother or son” Beshara cheerfully said following the memorable run.

“I couldn’t believe the price he went out at; he is always underrated and he never runs a bad race and today he just showed you.

“I always thought with a proper run he would have done well in the Cox Plate last year.

“We are back again and he (jockey Dwayne Dunn) will ride him in the Cox Plate.

“We have been all around Australia with him; he is by Good Journey and he has put us on a good journey. We owe him more than he owes us” Beshara concluded.

Dwayne Dunn said the race was quite messy early on and was excited by the chance of riding race tactics paid off with the six-year-old.

“There was a bit of hustle and bustle early and there were horses that went a little further forward than we would have expected”.

“We came out negative today, we found out we put him too close and he only plugged to the line the other day, but as you have seen being a little bit kinder in the first half makes him finish a lot better.

“At the mile it was starting to get a bit tough up the front and it was great to be out the back minding our business”.

Having flown heavily under the radar so far, there will be no ore hiding for the clearly competitive six-year-old, who will have to be even better if he is to compete with favourite’s It’s A Dundeel and Atlantic Jewel in the Cox Plate.
