2013 Group One Turnbull Stakes Nominations

The 2013 Group One Turnbull Stakes is set to be one of the most high-profile races in the history of the event, with a total of 31 nominations for the AU$500,000 event to be run at Australia’s famous Flemington Racecourse this Saturday, October 5th.

An unbelievable 14 winners at Group One level have been included, fighting it out for a capacity of only 16 final places with a number of leading contenders for the Caulfield Cup set to miss out on earning a start.

Lloyd Williams’ Macedon Lodge is poised to feature heavily, with Green Moon, Masked Marvel, Fawkner, Seville, Sea Moon and Mourayan all nominated for the event.

To date, Fawkner, Green Moon and Sea Moon have been confirmed by Williams to remain in Melbourne this weekend, while Masked Marvel and Seville look likely to head to Sydney for the Group Three Craven Plate and Group One Metropolitan Handicap respectively.

Leading Trainers Mick Price, Peter Moody, Chris Waller, Gai Waterhouse and David Hayes represent the other camps that may feature multiple runners in the field.

The betting market for the Melbourne Cup, Australia’s richest and most renowned race will likely be altered heavily at Bet365 Bet365 following the running of the Turnbull Stakes, with the current three favourites; Puissance De Lune, Fiorente and Hawkspur all set to meet for this first time during the current Australian Spring Racing Carnival.

Current Cup favourite Puissance De Lune will have the opportunity to record his first ever win at Group One level after a narrow defeat in the Makybe Diva Stakes and a late charge for 7th in the Underwood Stakes just two weeks ago.

Fiorente will be aiming for his second straight win after victory in the Dato’ Tan Chin Stakes at Australia’s Moonee Valley, while Hawkspur will be looking to re-capture winning form after a disappointing run in the Group One George Main Stakes.
