Verema Announced as a Melbourne Cup Certainty
We are now just over two months from the biggest day of the Australian Racing calendar; the Group One AU$6 million Emirates Melbourne Cup.
As entrants are starting to assemble, it was revealed this week that the Aga Khan will have his first Cup runner, following confirmation Verema will make the long trip down under.
In what connections will be hoping is a run of good omens, the mare is trained by Alain de Royer Dupre, who prepared Americain to win the 2 mile event in 2010 and most recently took out the Prix de Kergolay, the same race Americain won on his build up to the cup.
The Aga Khan is one of the world’s most successful racehorse owners and breeders whose sentiments were passed on my camp representative Georges Rimaud.
“His Highness the Aga Khan is delighted to have his first ever runner in the Melbourne Cup” Rimaud told Racing Victoria recently.
“Verema is an improving filly that has won two consecutive Group Two staying races against the colts. She likes good ground, travels well and is very consistent.
“Her trainer, Alain de Royer Dupree, who previously won the Melbourne Cup with Americain, believes she has the right profile to be competitive in this race, so His Highness decided to let her take her chance” Rimaud said.
Racing Victoria’s international recruitment officer Leigh Jordan said the Aga Khan’s participation highlights the multiculturalism of Australia’s biggest day.
“His Highness the Aga Khan is one of the most influential owners and breeders in the world, so we are delighted that he has decided to send his first runner to Australia”.
“We have seen French horses win two of the past three Cups and Verema will arrive in Melbourne with a similarly impressive form line.
“Fit and well, she will be one of the hardest to beat at Flemington” Jordan said.
Nominations for the Melbourne Cup will close on Tuesday, with official weights to be released a further two weeks later.
