Stevens’ Mounts Set to Steal Show at Doncaster

Newbury maiden-winning filly Lightning Thunder could be sent to Longchamp by Olly Stevens for an attempt at the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere on Arc day.

Looking likely to line up in a trial race at Doncaster next week ahead of the possible trip, recent form would suggest she is more than ready for a successful stint abroad.

A one-and-a-half length winner on her only start last month, the two-year-old is believed to be the real deal by Surrey-based Stevens.

“From the first time we saw her at the sales she looked the part” Stevens said.

“We gave time and she won a decent Newbury maiden in really good style.

“She ran in clutches at Newbury and I’d like to see her get into a better rhythm next time. It is too soon to aim her at Pattern company, so she will run in a conditions race at Doncaster next week before looking to bigger pots”.

“She is then likely to stick to seven furlongs for the Rockfel or the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere against the colts at Longchamp, which I wouldn’t worry about as she is a very masculine type. I would expect her to show definite improvement at Doncaster” Stevens told racingpost.com recently.

Stevens went on to discuss another juvenile to have caught his attention, Royal Ascot winner Extortionist, who has been successful on two of his four starts this season.

Despite a poor run at Maisons-Laffitte last time out, Stevens feels he can be excused and is expecting a vastly improved performance next week at Doncaster.

“Right from the off he looked very smart. His debut victory at Nottingham came as no surprise and he followed up in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot” Stevens told Racing and Football Outlook.

“It was a major disappointment when he trailed in last in the Prix Robert Papin… He is back in great form now with next week’s Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster his target” he concluded.

Set as both a stepping stone and a target for Olly Stevens’ runners, Doncaster is sure to produce some great quality racing.
