Pastorius Set To Tackle Coral Eclipse
Jockey Olivier Peslier is confident that German colt Pastorius can bounce back from his disappointing last start effort and win the Coral Eclipse at Sandown on Saturday.
Pastorius went into the Group 1 Singapore Cup as the clear favourite but was never in the race and finished second last, seventeen and a half lengths behind winner Military Attack.
Peslier said the son of Soldier Hollow didn’t handle the hot conditions in Singapore and will improve significantly in his return to European soil on Saturday.
“I thought he won very well at Longchamp but in Singapore the weather was too humid for him as he was very nervous and sweated a lot,” Peslier told The Racing Post.
“All the Europeans who went there seemed to run badly and I think you can forget that run.
“He is better in Europe and even if it is hot it will not be so humid.”
The leading jockey admitted that Peslier will have a hard time upsetting duel Group 1 winner Al Kazeem and has his eyes set on a top three finish in the one mile and two furlong race.
“It will not be easy for him Saturday as he is running against very good horses,” Peslier said.
“I’ll ride him for a place because it is going to be difficult, but he is good enough to run very well.”
Pastorius has had a great deal of success in the last twelve months and had picked up three Group 1 victories in Germany and France.
The four-year-old scored his maiden Group 1 victory in the Deutsches Derby in July before going on to win the Bayerisches Zuchtrennen and defeat Maxios and Dunaden in the Prix Ganay at Longchamp.
Pastorius (9/1) is on the sixth line of the 2013 Coral Eclipse betting market at Bet365, behind Al Kazeem (13/8), The Fugue (7/2), Declaration of War (7/2), Mars (5/1) and Mukhadram.
