Sole Power To Contest July Cup

King’s Stand Stakes winner Sole Power is set to take part in the 2013 July Cup after recovering well from his Royal Ascot triumph.

The six-year-old came from the back of the field and showed tremendous acceleration to catch South African sprinter Shea Shea on the line in the King’s Stand Stakes to claim his second Group 1 victory.

Sole Power has generally struggled over the July Cup distance of six furlongs but trainer Eddie Lynam is confident that the staying ability of the son of Kyllachy has improved and he can last the extra distance and score back-to-back Group 1 wins.

“Sole Power has taken Royal Ascot in his stride and it’s all systems go for the July Cup,” Lynam told The Racing Post.

“We are very hopeful that he will last out the extra distance.

Johnny Murtagh is very confident that he will stay the six furlongs and he settles so much better in his races nowadays so we have decided to give it a go.”

Despite his impressive victory at Royal Ascot, Sole Power is still well down the 2013 July Cup betting market at Bet365 Bet365 with Diamond Jubilee Stakes winner Lethal Force a narrow favourite from Shea Shea.

Lethal Force scored a dominant victory in the feature event on the final day of the Royal Ascot meeting and trainer Clive Cox is hopeful he can replicate that effort in the July Cup.

“I am thrilled to bits with Lethal Force and although the track holds slight concerns, it is such a valuable race that one feels drawn towards having a crack at the July Cup,” Cox said.

Starspangledbanner in 2010 was the last Diamond Jubilee Stakes winner to go on and win the July Cup while history is against Sole Power with no King’s Stand Stakes winner scoring in the July Cup since Never So Bold in 1985.

Other Royal Ascot placegetters Shea Shea, Pearl Secret, Society Rock and Krypton Factor as well as Australian sprinter Shamexpress and South African Soft Falling Rain are among the entries for the Group 1 sprint that will be held at Newmarket on July 17th.
