Al Kazeem Set For Coral-Eclipse
Prince of Wales’s Stakes winner Al Kazeem is set to make his next appearance in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown next month rather than the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.
Al Kazeem was a clear favourite in the 2013 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes betting market at Bet365 but trainer Roger Charlton said yesterday that the son of Dubawi will run in the Coral-Eclipse instead, as he seeks to claim his third straight Group 1 victory.
“Al Kazeem might be best at a mile and a half but the plan is that we will run in the Eclipse and not the King George,” Charlton told The Racing Post.
Charlton has not been shy in laying out his long term ambitions for Al Kazeem, with the 2013 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe his number one target for the rest of the season that will also include a return to Ireland.
“The Eclipse will be followed by the Irish Champion and then the Arc,” Charlton said.
“That gives him two months off after Sandown and another month before the Arc.”
Al Kazeem (7/4) is now the favourite in the 2013 Coral-Eclipse betting market followed by Epsom Derby winner Ruler of the World (4/1); St James’s Palace Stakes runner-up Toronado (5/1) and John Gosden-trained The Fugue (5/1).
St Nicholas Abbey has replaced Al Kazeem as the favourite in the King George betting market while the world’s top-rated horse Cirrus Des Aigles, who resumed with a disappointing fifth in the Grand Prix De Saint-Cloud, is on the second line of betting.
Al Kazeem has shrugged off the injury concerns that have plagued his career to become the dominant horse over one mile and two furlongs this season.
He resumed with a victory over Thomas Chippendale in the Group 3 Gordon Richards Stakes before upsetting Camelot in the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup and scoring his maiden Royal Ascot victory in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes.
