2013 Ascot Gold Cup Betting Update
Rite of Passage and Saddler’s Rock will both go into the Ascot Gold Cup fresh after skipping the Seamus & Rosemary McGrath Memorial Saval Beg at Leopardstown on Friday.
The Saval Beg has traditionally been used as a warm-up for the Ascot Gold Cup but connections of both horses have decided not to risk them just two weeks before the start of the 2013 Royal Ascot Festival.
Rite of Passage has only raced twice since his victory in the 2010 edition of the race but is still on top of the 2013 Ascot Gold Cup betting market at odds of 7/1.
Trainer Dermot Weld said he is happy with the form of the Giant’s Causeway gelding but chose to skip the Saval Beg because of concerns over the condition of the Leopardstown track.
“Rite Of Passage is in very good form but the ground at Leopardstown is going to be very quick and I’ve decided not to risk him,” Weld said.
“He will go to Ascot without a prep run.”
Saddler’s Rock finished third behind Colour Vision and Opinion Poll in last’s year Gold Cup and is on the second line of betting to go one better in 2013.
The five-year-old finished a disappointing seventh in the 2013 Dubai Gold Cup in March but according to trainer John Oxx is in excellent condition.
“Everything is fine with Saddler’s Rock,” Oxx said.
“We decided not to run at Leopardstown and we will be going straight to the Gold Cup at Ascot with him now.”
Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old Estimate is on the third line of betting after her impressive first-up performance in the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes.
The Monsun filly is owned by the Queen so is expected to receive a great deal of support in the lead-up to the race.
Times Up is on the fourth line of betting at Ascot Gold Cup odds of 9/1 despite his disappointing effort in the Group 3 Henry II Stakes.
The Ed Dunlop-trained gelding was one of the form stayers in Europe last season but will have to improve significantly to be a threat at Royal Ascot.
Other stayers near the top of the Ascot Gold Cup betting market are: Colour Vision (10/1), Simenon (10/1), High Jinx (10/1) and Cavalryman (10/1).
