Sky Lantern Wins Thrilling 1000 Guineas
A perfectly timed ride from jockey Richard Hughes was just enough for Sky Lantern to get across the line in a thrilling finish to the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday.
Sky Lantern flashed home in the final furlong to score a narrow victory from Just The Judge and Moth.
Hughes thoroughly deserved his first ever British Classics win and brought Sky Lantern from well back to hit the front in the dying stages of the race.
An emotional Hughes was clearly delighted with the victory.
“It’s about time,” Hughes said.
“I believed in this filly and she came good.
“She is a very good filly who loves fast ground and she deserves this.
“They didn’t go over fast and it was all about getting her plenty of cover.”
Trainer Richard Hannon was quick to pay credit to the leading jockey.
“I am delighted for Hughsie, he deserves it,” Hannon said.
“He is one of the best jockeys ever and I am pleased that he is one of mine.”
With just over a furlong left to run Just The Judge looked as though she was going to win the race for sponsors QIPCO, before Sky Lantern appeared on the scene, but owner Sheikh Fahad was still delighted with the effort.
“She ran a fabulous race,” Fahad said.
“She got to the front and looked like the winner from a long way out, but Hughesie has also ridden a great race.
“I’m still pretty confident we can change it around later in the season.”
Pre-race favourite Hot Snap, who defeated Sky Lantern in the Nell Gwyn Stakes at her last start, never looked comfortable and was being niggled at by jockey Tom Queally a long way from home before finishing a disappointing ninth.
Sky Lantern is not expected to contest the Oaks but third place finisher Moth is now the favourite for the event after her fast finishing performance.
The Aidan O’Brien trained filly is on top of the Investec Oaks betting market at Bet365 followed by Liber Nauticus, Just The Judge and Hot Snap.
