Dawn Approach Tops Epsom Derby Entries
2000 Guineas winner Dawn Approach remains the clear favourite for the 2013 Epsom Derby after the latest set of forfeits was taken today.
There are only fifteen horses left in Epsom Derby contention including Irish 2000 Guineas winner Magician who remains a chance of backing up this Saturday.
Magician stamped himself as an Epsom Derby contender with a dominant victory in Curragh on Saturday that even made Dawn Approach’s trainer Jim Bolger sit up and take notice.
“I thought Magician’s performance on Saturday was very smart,” Bolger said.
Aidan O’Brien has a strong 2013 Epsom Derby hand with Battle of Marengo, Mars, Ruler of the World, Flying The Flag and Festive Cheer set to join Magician in the final field.
Jim Bolger also has Trading Leather in the Derby field but said he will only run if Dawn Approach was ruled out of the race.
“Trading Leather has been left in the Investec Derby as a precaution,” Bolger said.
“Dawn Approach is continuing to please me and I am looking forward to running him in the Investec Derby at Epsom Downs on Saturday.”
Leading jockey Kieren Fallon is currently without a ride in the 2013 Epsom Derby but believes Dawn Approach is clearly the horse to beat and doesn’t think he will have any trouble running out the mile and a half of the Derby.
“Unfortunately, at the moment I don’t have a ride, but the one I would like to be on is Dawn Approach,” Fallon told The Express.
“I have a lot of admiration for his trainer Jim Bolger,” Fallon said.
“He believes he will get the trip, if he hadn’t thought that, he would have gone down an other road.
“When Dawn Approach won the Guineas, the further he went, the further he went away from his rivals.”
Dawn Approach (Evens) is the clear favourite in the 2013 Epsom Derby betting market at Bet365 followed by Battle of Marengo (5/1), Magician (6/1), Ocovango (8/1) and Chopin (10/1).
