Lord Windermere Wins 2013 RSA Chase
Lord Windermere has won the Grade 1 2013 RSA Chase in dramatic circumstances at the Cheltenham Festival today.
The well backed Boston Bob looked the winner of the race as his cruised to the lead as the horses turned for home but the Willie Mullins-trained gelding crashed out at the final jump to leave the race to be decided by Lord Windermere and Lyreen Legend.
Lord Winderemere was too strong in the concluding stages and scored by a length and three quarters to give former jockey Jim Culloty his first Cheltenham Festival victory as a trainer.
Culloty was delighted with the victory that he said had been over a year in the making.
“I knew this horse would like Cheltenham,” Culloty said.
“I could have brought him here last year and he would have run well in a hurdle but we wanted a chaser and he’s a proper chaser.”
In the other Grade 1 race of the day The New One proved too strong for Rule The World and Pont Alexandre in the Neptune Investment Novices’ Hurdle.
The New One made a mistake at the second last hurdle but was able to recover and score by four lengths.
Jockey Sam Twiston-Davies said the son of King’s Theatre could not have performed better.
“He was just brilliant,” Twiston-Davies said.
“He travelled great and you won’t get a much better feeling than that.
“Today’s race was very competitive and he really picked up.”
Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies was also impressed with the performance and already has his sights set on the 2014 Champion Hurdle.
“He’s a real class horse and the whole race was run to suit and he showed an exceptional turn of foot,” Twiston-Davies said.
“We might go back to two miles and go for the real top races now.”
