Henderson Admits Bobs Worth Gold Cup Preparation
Trainer Nicky Henderson admitted that the preparation for Cheltenham Gold Cup favourite Bobs Worth has not been ideal and that he would have preferred to run the star gelding more in the lead-up to the race.
Bobs Worth is the favourite for the feature event of the 2013 Cheltenham Festival despite only having one run this preparation.
The son of Bob Back has not raced since winning the Hennessey Gold Cup on the 1st of December last year.
“Bobs Worth has really got a bit to prove in that he has only really had one run outside novice chasing and that was in a handicap so he has got to do it against the big boys,” Henderson said.
“It is a step up and I would have liked to have run him more on the way.
“He had one little hiccup himself and the whole winter has been the same the ground has been desperate.”
Henderson said he does not regret scratching Bobs Worth from the Argento Chase or failing to run him in the Denman Chase.
“His one opportunity to run came when the ground was bottomless and I am glad we did not go for that,” Henderson said.
“He is a horse who is a bit more fragile than some of them and he wouldn’t want a hard race in heavy ground beforehand.
“I always felt the Denman Chase was too close to Cheltenham for him, he’s that sort of horse, he likes a break.”
Bobs Worth remains on the top of the Cheltenham Gold Cup betting market at Bet365 at odds of 3/1 followed by Willie Mullins-trained Sir Des Champs (4/1), Denman Chase winner Silviniaco Conti (11/2) and 2011 Gold Cup winner Long Run (5/1).
