2013 Grand National Weights Released
Paul Nicholls-trained Tidal Bay has been awarded the top weight for the 2013 Aintree Grand National that will be run on the 6th of April.
The twelve-year-old gelding proved his quality with victory in the Grade 1 Lexus Chase at Leopardstown, at the end of last year, and has been victorious at Aintree on three occasions.
The son of Flemensfirth was rated 162 by BHA head of handicapping Phil Smith and will carry 11st 10lb in the famous race.
Nicholls finally broke through for his maiden Grand National triumph with Neptune Collonges last year and has a strong list of entries for this year’s edition.
Join Together, What A Friend and Harry the Viking are all expected to line-up for the leading trainer in April.
Irish trainer Willie Mullins has the largest contingent entered for the race with seven charges, headlined by ten-year-old Prince De Beauchene, while fellow Irishman Gordan Elliot has six horses still in contention including Backstage who has not lost since the 2011 Irish Grand National.
The 11st 2lb given to Seabass, who finished third in the event last year, has left trainer Ted Walsh mystified but he still plans on setting the son of Turtle Island for the race.
“I don’t know how Seabass can get over 11st this year if Tidal Bay is rated 171 and my horse is rated 154,” Walsh told The Racing Post.
“Whatever Phil Smith does, he does – it is immaterial to me and I can’t change it but you don’t have to be a great mathematician to subtract 54 from 71.”
In contrast, Donald McCain was delighted with the 11 stone given to 2011 Grand National winner Ballabriggs.
“That weight is fine for Ballabriggs and it will be grand if the top horse (Tidal Bay) runs because then we will have a lovely racing weight,” McCain said.
On His Own and Prince De Beauchene (13/1) are on top of the betting market followed by Seabass (15/1), Tidal Bay (15/1), Teaforthree (17/1), Join Together (17/1) and Colbert Station (19/1).
