2013 Grand National Preparations Heat Up For Favourite
Trainer Willie Mullins announced yesterday that Grand National favourite On His Own will have one more run before the famous race at Aintree on Saturday April 6.
On His Own is the clear favourite in the Grand National betting market at Bet365 and is currently available at odds of 9/1 after returning to the races with a solid victory in the Grade 2 Boyne Hurdle at Navan last week.
Speaking in his Racing Post column Mullins said he was delighted with the son of Presenting’s form but believes he needs another run before the Grand National.
“To win a Grade 2 race against more experienced hurdlers on only his second start over hurdles and his first race of the season was a fair effort,” Mullins said.
“It showed that he has plenty of class about him and the intention now is to get another run into him, probably over fences, before he goes for the John Smith’s Grand National.”
Fellow Grand National contender Wyck Hill is still on track for the race despite pulling up sore from the Racing Plus Chase on Saturday.
The son of Pierre finished at the tail of the field but trainer David Bridgwater said the poor performance could be explained by an injury picked up during the race.
“He’s was very sore this morning and peeled a load of skin off his leg,” Bridgwater said on Sunday.
“I’m not sure where he picked up the cut, but looking at the replay he may have been caught by Mister Hyde when he fell at the first.
“He’s had eight stitches and 14 staples put in it, which I know would stop me.”
Wyck Hill is currently available at Grand National odds of 33/1 and Bridgwater confirmed that he will continue on with his campaign.
“There was no flesh injury it was just skin so it’s superficial and I’d like to think it will not hold him back for too long but you never know,” Bridgwater said.
“I’m not sure about Cheltenham but both eyes are firmly on Aintree.”
