Imperial Commander Tops Aintree Grand National Entries

Imperial Commander is one of eighty-four horses entered for the John Smith’s Grand National that will be run at Aintree on April 6th.

The inclusion of the 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner was a surprise to many but owners Imperial Racing stated on Twitter that Imperial Commander’s main target was still the Gold Cup and he was unlikely to take his place in the Grand National.

The 2013 Grand National betting market, at Bet365 Bet365, is currently headed by Willie Mullins-trained duo On His Own and Prince De Beauchene.

On His Own has not raced since he fell in the 2012 Grand National while Prince De Beauchene returned to racing with an impressive victory in the Woodlands House Hotel Hurdle.

Paul Nicholls-trained Join Together is on the next line of betting at odds of 16/1.

The son of Old Vic finished a disappointing seventh first-up in the Grade 3 United House Gold Cup Handicap but returned to form with a solid second place finish behind Hello Bud in the Becher Handicap Chase.

Diamond Jubilee National Hunt Chase winner Teaforthree is another horse heading to Aintree after he finished second in the Welsh Grand National earlier this month.

Welsh Grand National winner Monbeg Dude has also been entered for the race but at this stage is unlikely to compete.

The son of Witness Box will be the first horse to compete the Grand National double since Silver Birch in 2004 if he is successful.

Cappa Bleu finished fourth behind Neptune Collonges in 2012 but trainer Evan Williams is confident he will improve on that effort in 2013.

“He is a very unexposed horse and his inexperience probably caught him out last year, but hopefully he will benefit from that this time around,” Williams said.

Sunnyhillboy and Seabass, who rounded out the placing’s last year, are also set to contest the race again this year.
