Cheltenham Gold Cup Favourite Out of Argento Chase
2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup favourite Bobs Worth has been pulled out of this weekend’s Argento Chase after a routine inspection produced some worrying results.
The gelding will now head straight to the Cheltenham Festival without a run since his victory in the Hennessy Gold Cup on December 1st.
Trainer Nicky Henderson announced the disappointing news earlier today.
“Bobs Worth will miss Saturday’s race because figures from his tracheal wash weren’t as they should be before a race,” Henderson said.
“He’s not sick or anything like that, but I just wouldn’t want to run on that figure.
“It’s a shame because everyone was looking forward to the race and Cheltenham are putting in a terrific effort to get the meeting on.”
Henderson was adamant that Bobs Worth will be ready for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and that the lack of a preparatory race would not affect him.
“I’m sure that Bobs Worth will be fine in a few days and what has happened will definitely not affect his chance in the Cheltenham Gold Cup,” the leading trainer said.
“That will be his next race, and not having a run beforehand is not a concern, after all he won the Hennessy first time out this season.”
In another blow to the Aregento Chase field Paul Nicholls-trained Tidal Bay is not expected to take his spot in the race after pulling up slightly lame after a training exercise this morning.
“Myself and Clifford Baker have looked him over and the problem is hard to diagnose,” Nicholls said.
“It could be either an infection brewing in his off-hind foot, or he has pulled a small muscle.
“We will obviously monitor him in the next 24 hours, and then make a decision on his participation in the morning.”
The news has played havoc with the Argento Chase betting market at Bet365 that has been temporarily suspended.
Grands Crus is expected to be the new race favourite followed by Imperial Commander.
