Red Cadeaux Wins Hong Kong Vase
Red Cadeaux has finally claimed a Group 1 victory by winning the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin on Sunday.
The Ed Dunlop-trained gelding received a lovely run and showed exceptional acceleration in the final furlong to narrowly score the victory over Jaguar Mail.
The victory was just deserves for the connections of Red Cadeaux who were narrowly denied victory in the 2011 Melbourne Cup.
”He deserved this win – three pixels in the Melbourne Cup last year, no pace in the Melbourne Cup this year and he got struck into in the Japan Cup and we should have finished sixth; he was the leading European horse there. It’s a fantastic day for everyone,” trainer Ed Dunlop said.
Dunlop was quick to pay credit to controversial jockey Gerald Mosse as well as owner Ronald Arculli.
”At the 200m mark I thought we were going to get beaten by Jaguar Mail but Gerald (Mosse) gave him a great ride and he was in the right place,” Dunlop said.
”Ronald Arculli deserves huge praise, and I’m so chuffed for him – to have a winner here is a huge deal.”
Mosse was delighted with the victory and praised the staying ability as well as the guts of Red Cadeaux.
”Even if we went for one more lap no-one would pass me,” Mosse said.
”Jaguar Mail made me make my move because I feared at the 500m that someone was coming up so I decided right away to pick up.
“From there he really fought to the line and showed fighting spirit all the way.”
Andre Fabre-trained Meandre ran on well to finished third while 2011 winner Dunaden didn’t show his usual turn of foot and finished fifth.
Other European trainer stayers Bayrir, Dancing Rain, Joshua Tree, Pagera and Chinchon finished well outside the placing’s.
