Long Run Ready For Betfair Chase
Jockey Sam Waley-Cohen believes that Long Run can be the star of the 2012/2013 jumps racing season and is confident that he can begin his campaign with a win in the Betfair Chase at Haydock Park on Saturday.
Long Run had a successful 2011/2012 season, finishing second behind Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase and King George VI Chase, but Waley-Cohen is confident that the seven-year-old gelding will be even better this season and can return to his Grade 1 winning form of the 2010/2011 season.
“Long Run has developed into a big, strong racehorse which we are all very excited about,” Waley-Cohen said.
“I think you would have to say he didn’t achieve the heights last season that he achieved the year before. You always set your aspirations by what you’ve done in the past, but in many ways you can’t be disappointed about being beaten by arguably the greatest horse of all time (Kauto Star).”
Long Run won both the Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase and King George VI Chase at the start of 2011 and despite not reaching those heights last season Waley-Cohen is adamant that the son of Cadoudal improved as a horse.
“It’s very hard to tell the difference in a horse from one year to another until you get to the sharp end of a race. The results clearly stand for themselves in that he didn’t run to the same mark as he did the year before. But in terms of how Long Run felt through his races, I thought his jumping was significantly better than the year before and he was much more mature,” Waley-Cohen.
Long Run (5/4) is currently the favourite in the Betfair Chase betting market at Bet365 followed by Silviniaco Conti (11/4), Imperial Commander (6/1) and The Giant Bolster (10/1).
