O’Brien Worried About Camelot’s Staying Ability

Leading jockey Joseph O’Brien is unsure whether Camelot will be able to stay 1m6½f trip in the St Leger at Doncaster this Saturday.

The undefeated colt will become the first horse to win the Triple Crown since Nijinsky in 1970 if he is successful in the St Leger.

The Montjeu colt is unproven at distances longer than 1m4f and O’Brien is as unsure as anybody whether his star mount will last the extra two furlongs.

“Camelot is an exceptional horse with a brilliant turn of foot. Whether he will stay a mile and three-quarters, that’s the big question and nobody knows the answer until Saturday,” said the jockey.

“It may only be just over two furlongs further than he has been before but that is still a lot. There are no certainties in racing though and we just don’t know about the extra distance in the St Leger.”

Despite the hesitations about his staying ability, O’Brien was brimming in praise for the colt that has given him the opportunity win the Triple Crown for his father, legendary trainer Aiden O’Brien.

“He is a jockey’s dream to ride as everything comes naturally to him. You let him come alive in your hands and he is actually very easy to ride. He is just unbelievable and is not like any other horse I have ever ridden,” O’Brien said.

Bookmakers obviously don’t share O’Brien’s doubts, about Camelot’s staying ability, and have the superstar colt rated as a 33/100 favorite in St Leger betting markets.

Camelot is followed in the market at Bet365 Bet365 by Main Sequence (7/1), Thought Worthy (8/1) and Michelangelo (10/1).
