Hawkeyethenoo Prevails in Thrilling Stewards Cup Finish

Hawkeyethenoo took until the final stride to run down Imperial Guest and win the Stewards Cup at Goodwood on Saturday.

Imperial Guest looked like he had the race won when he hit the lead with just under two furlongs to run but was mowed down by the Jim Goldie trained Hawkeyethenoo, who prevailed by a nose.

Goldie was delighted that his horse had broken through for his first in over a year.

“It is terrific for us. He has been very unlucky this year so it is a great race to get some luck in,” Goldie said in a post-race interview.

In contrast George Margarson, the trainer of Imperial Guest, was devastated his horse had missed out of the biggest win of his career especially by such a slim margin.

“The draw was fine and everything was right – it was just on the nod wasn’t it? It’s killing me,” the disappointed trainer said.

Hawkeyethenoo and Imperial Guest, as well as third place Lui Rei, may get a chance to battle again with all three being nominated for the September 22nd Ayr Gold Cup.

They are likely to be joined by 4th place finisher, and pre-race favorite, Waffle who stormed home with a strong run in the final furlong on Saturday.

Hawkeyethenoo will be looking to improve on his 10th place finish in the 2011 Ayr Gold Cup.

The Stewards Cup concluded the Glorious Goodwood Festival with the event drawing good crowds despite facing stiff competition from the 2012 London Olympics.
